Abstract

A stationary, magnetically stabilized helium arc plasma is taken as an example to show that ionization degrees in such plasmas with large electron temperature and electron density gradients may not be calculated from static ionization relations valid for homogeneous plasmas (e. g. the Saha equation). Instead, ionization degrees in inhomogeneous plasmas must be determined from continuity equations of the form div (n Ζ υ Ζ )n Ζ = J Ζ-1 n Ζ-1 -R Ζ n Ζ nz where J Ζ-1 and n Ζ-1 are the ionization rate and the density of the Z -1 times charged ions, and R Ζ , n Ζ and υ Ζ are the recombination rate, the density and the centre-of-mass velocity of the Z times charged ions. Static ionization formulae may not be applied to inhomogeneous plasmas because the finite relaxation times for the attainment of static ionization equilibria result in these ionization equilibria being displaced by the motion of the ions parallel to the direction of electron temperature and density gradients. This is proved by means of two independent operations: firstly, the velocities of the helium ions, these being governed primarily by ambipolar diffusion, are calculated with the spectroscopically measured state variables from the momentum equations of the plasma; secondly, the velocities of the doubly charged ions are determined by integrating the continuity equation for these ions, use again being made of the measured state variables and of the ionization and recombination rates J 1 and R 2 of the helium ions that were calculated for this special plasma. The agreement between the independently obtained velocity values proves that the degree of ionization of the helium ions in this inhomogeneous plasma is described not by a static ionization formula, but by the continuity equations for these ions. Furthermore, it is shown that the ionization "equilibria" between singly charged and neutral helium particles and between three times (CIV) and four times (CY) charged carbon particles are not determined by means of static ionization formulae either. The influence of this hitherto disregarded effect on the spectroscopic determination of the electron temperature in the plasma discussed is illustrated in a diagram.

Abstract

In previous studies the electromagnetic radiation resulting from nonlinear self-interaction of electron plasma waves was treated by taking the electron pressure to be isotropic. Here we determine the radiation flux in the far field of the disturbance for the anisotropic case, too. By assuming statistical homogeneity in space and time and accounting only for pair correlations of the particle density the mean flux near the second harmonic of the plasma frequency can be expressed by the energy spectrum of the primary waves. As an application we find approximate formulae for coronal conditions (type II and III bursts). The anisotropy corrections are of the order (a/c) 2 (a=electron sound velocity, c = velocity of light).

Abstract

Assuming a surface delta interaction (SDI) between identical as well as between non-identical nuclei, we investigate the pairing properties of spherical odd mass (s.o.m.) nuclei in the regions 40 ≦ Z ≦ 49, 53 ≦ N 70 and 51 ≦ Z ≦ 59, 64 ≦ 82. Applying Bogoliubov’s transformation to the neutrons and protons separately and applying the compensation principle we arrive at the coupled system of BCS equations. Determining the quasi-particle energies and the chemical potentials of the neutron and proton system by numerical solution of these equations, we find rather impressive agreement between theory and experiment. We further find that for a SDI-model the incorporation of n-p forces seems to be both necessary and sufficient for a detailed understanding of the low-lying energy levels in the above mentioned regions. In addition, the SDI-model has the advantage of analytic simplicity as compared to more refined realistic (multiparameter) models

Abstract

Iron spheres of μ-size were accelerated by a modified 2 MV Van de Graaff accelerator to velocities from 0.5 to 10 km/sec. With these particles craters were produced in metal targets. The dimensions of the craters were measured by an electron microscope (Stereoscan). Systematical measurements were made for lead, cadmium, silver, copper and aluminum targets. The dependence of the crater diameter, depth and volume as function of the mass and the velocity of the projectile and of the target material is described.

Abstract

The spin echo line shapes of Rb87 and Br79.81 have been measured in undeformed and plastically deformed RbBr single crystals. Analysis of the line shape of the measured echoes shows that the quadrupolar part of the echoes is given by point defects in the case of undeformed crystals, whereas in deformed crystals this term is determined by dislocations. A quantitative evaluation of the width of the quadrupolar shape yields the mean dislocation density in the samples as a function of the shear stress acting during the deformation. It was found that the square root of the dislocation density is proportional to the shear stress.

Abstract

In this paper we introduce two new "magnetic" operators and we show that these are the creation and annihilation operators of the schrauben functions. The schrauben functions are the eigenfunctions of the Hamilton operator describing a free electron under the action of a uniform magnetic field. By transforming these two operators we obtain two other operators which we show to be of Harpers type, as was expected.

Abstract

In this paper the Dirac equation for a rectilinear onedimensional periodic potential is treated. It is shown that the energy eigenvalues are periodic functions of the wave number K ϰ and the continuous spectrum is split into energy bands. The end points of the energy bands are the points where the Bragg reflection takes place. These results are obtained by perturbation theory, as well as by the method of determinants, since the resulting eigenvalue equation has the form of a determinant which is similar to the Hill determinant.

Abstract

Zur Bestimmung der Druckabhängigkeit der Relaxationszeiten der Ausrichtung (alignment) der He 3 1 P-, 4 1 P-, 3 1 D-, 4 1 D-und 5 1 D-Zustände in Abhängigkeit vom Heliumdruck wurden Hanle-Effekt-Messungen bei Ionenstoßanregung durchgeführt. Durch Extrapolation ergaben sich die natürlichen Lebensdauern der untersuchten Zustände zu τ(3 1 P) = (2,0 ± 0,8) ns (1,7 ns); τ(4 1 P) = (4,0 ±0,6) ns (3,9 ns), τ(3 1 D) = (20,5 ±0,9 ns) (15,4 ns), τ(4 1 D) = (38,0 ±2) ns (37,8 ns), τ(5 1 D) = (68 ±7) ns (72,7 ns). Außerdem konnten aus der Druckabhängigkeit der Relaxationszeiten der 3 1 D-, 4 1 D-und 5 1 D-Zustände die Wirkungsquerschnitte der Zerstörung der Ausrichtung (alignment) durch Stöße mit Atomen im angeregten Zustand und Atomen im Grundzustand ermittelt werden: σ (2) (3 1 D) = 6 · 1 0 -14 cm 2 , σ (2) (4 1 D) =4·10 -14 cm 2 , σ (2) (5 1 D) = 7·10 -14 cm 2 (T = 297 °K).

Abstract

A Monte-Carlo method for the simulation of random walks and reactions of point defects in a lattice has been developed. It allows a physically more realistic treatment of point defect annealing than rate equations of diffusion theory. In this paper (I) the simulated annealing of monovacancies at an inexhaustible sink is compared with the results of the diffusion theory. Subsequently the method is applied to the precipitation of mono- and divacancies in an fee lattice.

Abstract

Random walks and reactions of point defects in face-centered cubic lattices have been simulated by means of a Monte-Carlo method described in the preceding paper (I) . In this paper the method is applied to the recombination of vacancies and interstitials. Equal or different numbers as well as random or correlated initial distribution of vacancies and interstitials are considered. The inter action between the defects is taken into account by a model for the pair volume surrounding a vacancy.

Abstract

Complex atomic scattering amplitudes calculated by the WKB-method and verified experimentally in earlier work are used to compute the decrease in intensity if imaging single atoms, plane arrays of atoms or atomic monolayers, especially of platinum atoms. By calculating the decrease of intensity in the centre of an atomic image for a large number of different objective apertures α and defocussing parameters Δf one gets a better survey for the limits of optimal underfocus. We used constants of spherical aberration C ö = 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 mm. The energy of the electrons is 100 keV. Some calculations are done up to 1200 keV. The use of complex scattering amplitudes does not justify to distinguish between amplitude and phase contrast. Both limiting cases are obtatined in the used theory. Two platinum atoms in nearest distance can be resolved in the optimal underfocus only for C ö = 0 .5 and 1 mm. But for larger C ö there exists a region at larger α with a much better resolution. These results show that there is a continuous transition from the resolution of an atomic pair up to that of the lattice planes in crystal films. Disks of 7 and 19 atoms in a two-dimensional dense packing are calculated and some deviations in optimal focus are found compared to the results of single atoms. At low α beyond the Bragg angle of the dense packed atomic rows no large difference exist if varying C ö and α. The single atoms are not resolved, but the decrease of intensity should be large enough for observation. Further calculations have been done about the contrast of a mono-atomic layer considering the influence of a vacancy too. The influence of a finite aperture of illumination and the energy distribution of the electrons are considered by folding the results with a distribution like a Gaussian error function.

Abstract

The complex permittivity of Triglycine Sulphate is measured from 0.5 to 4.5 kMc/s as a function of temperature. A dispersion is observed which is of a simple Debye relaxation rather than a resonance type. Thus the form of the relaxation differs from the Gaussian distribution of relaxation times found by HILL and ICHIKI. The relaxation frequency increases linearly with temperature above the Curie point. Above 0.5 kMc/s the real part of the permittivity undergoes a more and more pronounced minimum at the Curie point.

Ionic Charge Exchange in Gas Discharges in N 2 - O 2 -Mixtures. - The charge exchange reaction N 2 + + O 2 →N 2 +O 2 + influences the ion current of pulsed Townsend discharges in N 2 - O 2 -mixtures. This influence is investigated in mixtures with 1 . . . 20% oxygen at reduced electric fields from 100 to 500 V/cm Torr in a range of total pressure from 1 to 10 Torr. A least squares fit of the theoretical ion currents to the experimental ones allows to determine drift velocities of O 2 + -ions in the mixtures and rate constants of the charge exchange reaction.

Abstract

Nearly monochromatic electrons of low energy (0 - 200 eV) which pass through nitrogen of small pressure dissociate the N 2 molecule in a single collision into excited atoms or ions which emit a radiation in the extreme ultraviolet. The registered wavelengths can be attributed to known transitions. The excitation functions and appearance potentials of these dissociation processes are measured. In some cases the electron configuration of the second dissociation product can be determined from the appearance potentials. Furthermore it is shown that the gas-ionizing radiation of N 2 is due to these dissociation processes.

Abstract

The Raman and infrared spectra of the potassium and caesium salts of [TcX 6 ] -- and [ReX 6 ] -- (X = F, Cl, Br, I) have been measured in the range from 1000 to 45 cm -1 . The force constants are determined in the valence force field and in the standard Urey-Bradley field on the basis of the O h -symmetry. The fundamental vibration ν 6 is calculated from the force constants. Apart from the fluoro-compounds the bond-stretching force constants of the technetium complexes are shown to be smaller than those of the analogous rhenium complexes. Except for the iodo-compounds a distortion of the octahedral structure progressive in degree towards X = F can be concluded from the splitting of degeneracies.

Abstract

The Raman shifts in naturally occurring cinnabar (HgS), realgar (As 4 S 4 ) and orpiment (As 2 S 3 ) have been measured at room temperature using a photoelectrically recording Raman spectrometer with He-Ne laser excitation at 6328 Å. By using the infra-red spectra of these compounds it was possible to make a partial assignment of these shifts. The number and symmetries of the Raman active phonons were calculated for the covalently bonded "sub-units". Most of the theoretically predicted vibrations were observed. The theory that realgar and orpiment are built from the same structural units could be supported.

Abstract

On the basis of the results obtained in a previous paper it is shown that in the thermodynamic limit the analogues of the Massieu-Plandc functions are linked with each other by means of the Legendre transformation. The existence of the limiting function φ k (∞) implies the existence of the limiting function φ l (∞) (l<k) under the same assumptions. Passage to the limit and derivation with respect to all independent variables commute. A statistical derivation of the thermodynamic stability condition in its most general form is given which leads naturally to a statistical interpretation of the concept of thermodynamic stability.

Abstract

Es werden Thermoketten betrachtet, die zwei Elektrolyte mit insgesamt drei Ionenarten in geschmolzenem Zustand enthalten. Mit Hilfe der Methoden der Thermodynamik der irreversiblen Prozesse lassen sich die allgemeinen Ausdrücke für den Anfangswert und den Endwert der Thermokraft einer solchen Thermokette gewinnen. Die aus den Messungen bestimmbaren charakteristischen Größen sind die beiden Überführungsentropien der den Elektrolyten nicht gemeinsamen Ionenarten, gemessen relativ zur gemeinsamen Ionensorte. Die entsprechenden Formeln für Thermoketten mit reinen flüssigen Elektrolyten lassen sich als Grenzfälle ableiten. Messungen von Sundheim und Kellner an Thermoketten, kombiniert mit anderen Literaturdaten, ergeben die Überführungsentropien der Natrium-und Silberionen für die binäre Schmelze NaNO 3 + AgNO 3 in Abhängigkeit von der Zusammensetzung bei 310 °C. Anhangweise werden die Konsequenzen eines einfachen Ansatzes für die Uberführungszahlen, wie er für NaNO 3 + AgNO 3 zu gelten scheint, besprochen. Dabei wer den auch Konzentrationsketten behandelt.

Abstract

The width of the first Hfs-line of the Mn ++ EPR-spectrum in aqueous solutions with added diamagnetic and paramagnetic iron group or rare earth ions was measured at 3 cm wavelength and at 300 °K. The difference ΔH D in linewidth of Mn ++ in the paramagnetic and diamagnetic salt solutions is ascribed to dipolar interaction between Mn ++ and the other paramagnetic ions e. g. Co ++ , Ni ++ and Ce 3+ . The relaxation times τ s of these ions are too short for the EPR-spectrum to be detected in liquids. From the excess linewidth ΔH D relaxation times Ts for Co ++ , Ni ++ and Ce 3+ are estimated which agree well with τ s results from proton relaxation measurements in paramagnetic salt solutions.

Abstract

According to the theory of Faber and Ziman the electrical resistivity of Ag-Mg alloys was calculated from X-ray diffraction data. The pseudo-potentials of Animalu and Heine were used. The calculated results agree well with the data measured by the rotating field method. The calculation of partial interference functions for the different kinds of alloy systems are discussed extensively.

Abstract

The distributions ρ ij (r) of Au-Au, Sn-Sn and Au-Sn pairs have been calculated using the three partial interference functions I ij (K ) which were evaluated from the scattered x-ray intensities of liquid Au-Sn alloys measured by Kaplow, Strong and Averbach. The functions I AuAu (K) and I SnSn (K) and their corresponding Fourier transforms are similar to those observed in their respective pure liquids. The functions I AuSn ( K ) and ρ AuSn (r) resemble closely a model structure based on a solid AuSn alloy with a NiAs-type structure. The electrical resistivities of the alloys obtained with I ij (K ) and the pseudo-potential elements U i (K) show a large increase upon alloying Sn into Au in agreement with experimental observation.

Abstract

Polycrystalline NiO samples were equilibrated with different oxygen partial pressures from 10 -3 to 1 Atm in the temperature range 750 °C -1000 °C. Transient electrical conductivity was measured until a new equilibrium was attained after changing the oxygen partial pressure. By the time dependence of the electrical conductivity in isothermal conditions the diffusion coefficient of nickel vacancies was determined. Using the pertinent value for the vacancies equilibrium concentration, the self-diffusion coefficient of nickel in nickel oxide was obtained in good agreement with literature data.

Es wird eine Definition der Aktivitätskoeffizienten für binäre Elektrolytschmelzen aufgegriffen und so fortgeführt, daß man eine einzige Formel erhält, aus der man die Aktivitätskoeffizienten jeder beliebig zusammengesetzten Elektrolytschmelze ableiten kann. Für die Auswertung von EMK-Messungen findet man mit dieser Formel für den Logarithmus des Aktivitätskoeffizienten f k der Komponente k: worin Φ die EMK der isotherm-isobaren reversiblen galvanischen Kette mit den betrachteten Komponenten und Φ 0 die EMK der Kette mit der reinen Komponente k ist. q ergibt sich aus der in der Kette ablaufenden Reaktion; F ist die Faraday-, R die Gaskonstante, T die absolute Temperatur. Die ν und ϰ sind Zerfallszahlen und stöchiometrische Molenbrüche. Es werden an Hand dieser Gleichung aus der Literatur experimentelle Werte der Aktivitätskoeffizienten ermittelt. Die bisher übliche Definition von anderen Aktivitätskoeffizienten wird kritisch untersucht.

Objective
A Journal of Physical Sciences: Zeitschrift für Naturforschung A (ZNA) is an international scientific journal which publishes original research papers from all areas of experimental and theoretical physics. Authors are encouraged to pay particular attention to a clear exposition of their respective subject, addressing a wide readership. In accordance with the name of our journal, which means “Journal for Natural Sciences”, manuscripts submitted to ZNA should have a tangible connection to actual physical phenomena. In particular, we welcome experiment-oriented contributions.

Manuscripts considered for publication in A Journal of Physical Sciences: Zeitschrift für Naturforschung A undergo high-level refereeing. Mere formal correctness of a paper is not sufficient for its acceptance. Moreover, articles reporting a merely marginal extension of already existing knowledge are considered unsatisfactory. Instead, the key quality a publication in A Journal of Physical Sciences: Zeitschrift für Naturforschung A should possess is that it makes a genuine contribution to the advancement of its topic.
