Abstract

The validity of the second BETHE approximation 1 (dynamical 2-beam theory using Bethe's potential with weak-beam corrections) was tested for various situations of systematic and accidental interactions. For this test the structure potential V 002 of MgO was measured from the fine structure of the diffraction spot which one observes in a single crystal wedge experiment. In the Bethe potentials 119 weak reflections were taken into account; the electron accelerating voltage was 56 - 6 7 keV. Except in the neighbourhood of low-indexed zone axes, e.g. [110] , the second Bethe approximation allowed to determine the structure potential V 002 to be 6.90 V within an accuracy of about 2%. This was in good agreement with the result of G OODMAN and L EHMPFUHL 2

Abstract

The plane collisionless plasma diode between two hot emitters is investigated. Only potential distributions with not more than one extremum are considered. The condition E 2 > 0 is taken into account. Thus nonphysical solutions as given by other authors are excluded. As independent parameters the diode voltage and the neutral gas current on the emitters are introduced. In diagrams the type of potential distribution and the potential extremum are shown. Regions occur with several solutions or no solution of the Poisson equation. These regions are increased by a difference between the emitter temperatures and are decreased by a trapping of charge carriers near the potential extremum

Abstract

Geometry factors of cavity resonators for the determination of plasma electron density, density profile, and collision frequency Geometry factors of a number of cylindrical TEimn and TMimn cavity resonance modes are cal-culated as a function of the ratio of plasma and cavity radius and as a function of the radial electron density profile. In axial direction homogeneous and sinusoidal density profiles are assumed. Resonance modes with a small index l are suitable for the measurement of electron densities in narrow and dilute plasma columns; modes with an index l ≧ 2 are specially advantageous for measuring the density profile. Results of measurements of the electron density, density profile, and collision frequency in nitrogen are given.

Abstract

lntermolecular Rotation and, Dielectric Relaxation of Three Polar Groups Benzene derivations mono and para-disubstituted by chloromethyl, methoxy and acetyl groups have been investigated. Their complex dielectric constant was measured in dilute mesitylene solutions from -30° to 70 °C and also in benzene and carbon disulfide solutions at 20 °C for frequencies between 0.3 and 135 GHz. Already, chlorobenzene as a rigid molecule shows un-symmetrical absorption curves with flatter slopes at higher frequencies, where the influence of far infrared (FIR) absorption bands becomes noticeable. This additional absorption at millimetre waves can be approximated by a Debye-term. In a first approximation, its time constant is characterized by solvent and temperature and, therefore, has also been taken into account in deriving the relaxation time distribution from the absorption curves of the other molecules. For the discussion it has been assumed that molecules with free rotating groups in para position should have their absorption maximum at higher frequencies than the mono derivatives. Under these conditions relaxation time distributions of molecules with the CH 2 Cl-group can be derived from the measured absorption curves in such a way that the microwave absorption alone corresponds to the Budo model of a rotating group. The same interpretation may be given for molecules with the OCH 3 -group. The acetyl group must be considered rigid. Moreover, the paper discusses the activation energies for group rotation, the very high contribution to the FIR-absorption by the orientation polarisation of the investigated groups and the relaxation times of rigid molecules with different orientation of their dipole moment with respect to the long molecular axis

Abstract

Differential scattering cross sections of H + on various molecules and of H 2 + on Ar and Kr were measured at various energies between 5 eV and 40 eV. Several rainbows could be resolved for the systems H + -N 2 , H + -CO, H + -CO 2 and H + -SF 6 . In the case of H + -H 2 , secondary rainbows could be traced at higher energies (30 eV). Only the primary rainbow was observed for H + -CH 4 . The H 2 + -Ar and H 2 + -Kr systems also yielded rainbow structures. Broad additional maxima appeared at large angles for H 2 + -Kr which were atttributed to the crossing of potential curves. The rapid oscillations could not be observed. The measured differential cross sections for the systems H + -N 2 , CO, CO 2 , SF 6 and H 2 were fitted by a procedure described in part I using a simple Morse potential. The equilibrium distances r m were estimated from the relation r m = 0.7-r g (r g : gaskinetic radius of the molecule) which was found to hold approximately for the H + -noble gas systems. The following potential depths e were obtained: 4.15 eV for N 2 -H + ; 4.70 eV for CO-H + ; 5.10 eV for CO 2 -H + ; 3.66 eV for SF 6 -H + ; 4.04 eV for H 2 -H + . These values are averages because of the anisotropy of the potentials. The potential depth for the H + -H 2 system is little smaller than the theoretical value of 4.56 eV. This is attributed to nontriangular configurations in the scattering process. The scattering experiments with the system H 4 -CH 4 were evaluated classically, ε (H + -CH 4 ) was found to be 3.8 eV only. The large difference to the theoretical value ε = 5.45 eV is explained by the inadiabacity of the scattering process with respect to the movement of the H atoms in methane. ε (Ar-H 2 + ) and ε (KrH 2 + ) were found to be (1.3 ± 0.2 ) eV and (1.1 ± 0.2 ) eV, respectively. Energy level diagram are dicussed for the ion-molecule reactions Ar + (Kr + ) + H 2 → ArH + (KrH + ) + H including the ArH 2 + and KrH 2 + intermediate states. They show that most of the reaction energy becomes free in the approach of the reactants Ar + +H 2 . This effect is less pronounced for the Kr + ( 2 P 1/2 )+H 2 -reaction and even a small threshold energy exists for the Kr + ( 2 P 3/2 )+H 2 -reaction. reaction

Abstract

A Monte-Carlo-Method is applied to describe the backscattering of high energy heavy ions from metal surfaces taking into account the energy losses. The calculations yield the angular and energy distributions of the reflected particles together with the percentage distributions of the complete particle histories. Furthermore it is possible to get informations concerning penetration depths and the number of collisions during the interaction of these particles with the metal foils. The calculated distributions are in good agreement with known experiments

Abstract

The results of measurements at three temperatures on gases in the whole concentration range from pure o-D 2 to pure p-D 2 are presented in the form (γ p the molar fraction of p-D 2 ) X/X (rp=0) = 1 - ki yp-.k2 yp2, with ^ = 2 . 1 7 , 2.43, 2.97 - l O " 3 and A:2=2.37, 2.27, 2.24 - l O " 3 for 7 = 18.4, 19.6, 21.0 K respectively. From these coefficients, and making use of the Eucken relation, the ratios of the collision cross sections have been estimated to be Ω pp /Ω oo = 1 + (4.37 ± 0.05) • 10 -3 , Ω op /Ω oo = 1 + (1-05 ± 0.05) • 1O -3 . A temperature dependence of these ratios was not detected

Abstract

Durch Zonenschmelzen wurden einkristalline Bi 100-x Sb x -Legierungen im halbleitenden Bereich (5 ≦ x ≦ 40) mit 5, 10, 25 bzw. 40 At.-% Sb hergestellt, und zwar undotiert sowie mit Zusätzen des Donators Tellur bzw. des Akzeptors Sn. Die elektrischen Transportgrößen (elektrische Leitfähigkeit, magnetische Widerstandsänderung, Thermokraft, longitudinaler und transversaler Nernst- Ettingshausen-Effekt) wurden gemessen im Temperaturbereich von 80 °K bis Zimmertemperatur. Abstract

Nachdem nun die Herstellung von n-ZnSb gelungen ist, wird hier erstmals über das Verhalten einer größeren Anzahl ZnSb-Proben vom n-Typ berichtet. Die Herstellung der Proben mit Indium- Dotierung wird beschrieben, das instabile Verhalten bei Zimmertemperatur dargestellt. Die Temperaturabhängigkeit der elektrischen Transportgrößen (elektrische Leitfähigkeit, Hall-Effekt, Thermokraft, transversaler Nernst-Ettingshausen-Effekt) zeigt im Bereich von 80 °K bis Zimmertemperatur ein ähnliches eigenartiges Verhalten wie es für CdSb und ZnSb-CdSb-Mischkristalle gefunden wurde; bei Zimmertemperatur n-leitende Proben zeigen bei tiefen Temperaturen einen positiven Hall-Koeffizienten und eine positive Thermokraft. Eine erste Abschätzung für die Elektronenbeweglichkeit von ZnSb kann gegeben werden; für tiefe Temperaturen ergeben sich für diese Proben kleine Beweglichkeiten und niedrige Konzentrationen der Defektelektronen. Für im ganzen vorliegenden Temperaturgebiet p-leitende undotierte und dotierte Proben werden entsprechende Ergebnisse für die Transportgrößen, die Beweglichkeiten, Ladungsträgerkonzentrationen und effektiven Massen mitgeteilt

Abstract

Demixing phenomena in mixtures containing Li 2 SO 4 with ZnBr 2 , CdBr 2 or PbBr 2 have been extensively studied. It has been found that the tendency to demix in these systems is greater than in the corresponding systems containing chloride instead of bromide ions. Moreover, the extension of the miscibility gap in the investigated systems increases when going from Li, Zn/Br, SO 4 to Li, Pb/Br, SO 4 to Cd, Li/Br, SO 4 . This sequence in the tendency to demix is slightly different from that found for the systems containing chlorides. The analysis of the standard enthalpy variation of the methatetic reaction allows a correct prevision in the sequence of the tendency to demix for the studied systems

Abstract

Die Konfiguration am trivalenten Kohlenstoffatom (Radikalzentrum) organischer Radikale wurde anhand der MINDO/1-SCF-MO Methode und der 1 / 2 Elektron Approximation von DEWAR et al. studiert. Es zeigte sich in Ubereinstimmung mit den ESR-Untersuchungen, daß nicht alle Radikale eine planare Konfiguration besitzen. Die nichtplanare Konfiguration ist vor allem bei den cyclischen Radikalen mit kleineren, gespannten Ringen zu treffen. Beim Allyl-Radikal zeigte die Deformation des mittleren Protons eine Abhängigkeit vom C-C-C Valanz-Winkel. Es wurde festgestellt, daß die MINDO/2 Methode keine genaue Aussage über diese Konfiguration erlaubt. Lediglich die Bindungsabstände mancher cyclischer Radikale (mit planearer Konfiguration) sind minimisiert worden. Bei den C 5 H 5 und C 3 H 3 Radikalen wird in Übereinstimmung mit früheren theoretischen Arbeiten eine Jahn-Teller Deformation zu Gunsten der weniger symmetrischen Struktur (Cs) festgestellt

Abstract

The rotational spectrum of 2-fluoropyridine has been analyzed in the region between 7 - 40 GHz. The rotational constants for the vibrational ground state are: A = 5870.9 0 MHz, 5 = 2699.9 6 MHz, C = 1849.2 6 MHz. The small inertia defect indicates that the nuclear frame is planar. The two components of the electric dipole moment were obtained from Stark effect measurements: μa = 2.80 ± 0.06 D, μb = 1.87 ± 0.05 D. These values agree well with an INDO closed molecular orbital calculation done at T.I.F.R. From the hyperfine splittings of the rotational line the 14 N nuclear quadrupole coupling constant are determined. The values are : Χaa=-0.02±0.05 MHz, Xbb = -2.80±0.05 MHz, Xcc = +2.82±0.05 MHz

Abstract

Diffuse reflectance spectra of eight Pr 3+ complexes in the visible region have been recorded for the first time. From them, values of Slater-Condon (F 2 , F 4 , F 6 ), Racah (E 1 , E 2 , E 3 ) interelectronic repulsion, and Lande (ζ 4f ) parameters have been computed. The decrease in F 2 values of the complexes as compared to the free ion is greatest among all the parameters. The bonding parameter b 1 2 has been computed from the observed nephelauxetic ratio. Abstract

Starting from the exact formulation of the electric microfield distribution in an electron gas the question is investigated of whether collective phenomena are correctly included in previous calculations. Application of Böhm and Pines' procedure yields a separable expression for the total microfield distribution: the collective component is represented by a Gaussian distribution, the individual component is similar to the high-frequency profile of Baranger and Mozer. Both components vary with the cut-off parameter of the spectrum of the collective modes. For realistic values of this cut-off parameter the total distribution may differ from the high-frequency profile as much as ten per cent for systems close to the critical density. With increasing plasma parameter Λ the distribution approaches that of Holtsmark

Abstract

By means of the Clusius-Dickel thermal-diffusion column the range of the radiocarbon dating method may be extended by 20 000 years. It is shown in this work that the total sample amount required is reasonably low, if column dimensions are suitably chosen. The enrichment run time and the length of the thermal-diffusion column will allow sample enrichment in routine operation. Optimal values of column dimensions and operation conditions are calculated. With an all metal thermal-diffusion column that has been carefully constructed, a high reproducibility is found. The stationary as well as the non-stationary state operation are in agreement with column theory within 1%, concerning the enrichment both of C 13 H 4 and C 14 H 4 in methane. Die Mehrzahl der vorliegenden Untersuchungen über innere und äußere Schweratomeffekte (Zunahme der Spin-Bahn-Kopplung) in der Lumineszenz aromatischer Systeme bezieht sich auf Halogen als Schweratom 1 . - In dieser Mitteilung wird über den Einfluß von Hg (II) (Z Hg = 80) auf das Lumineszenzverhalten von Thionaphthen, Acenaphthen und Coronen beriditet. Zum Studium des inneren Schweratomeffekts erscheinen die Aryl- bzw. Heteroaryl-Hg (II)-acetatverbindungen geeignet, die in vielen Fällen durch Umsetzung des Aromaten mit Hg (II) -acetat leicht zugänglich sind. - Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wurde aus Acenaphthen ein Di-mercurierungsprodukt dargestellt, für das auf Grund des bekannten Verhaltens des Acenaphthens bei der elektrophilen Substitution und des IR-Spektrums (γ- CH-Schwingungen) die Konstitution I angenommen werden muß. Abstract

The results of measurements of the 23 Na-resonance of samples of the zeolite Linde 13X of SO 2 show that at low coverages the SO 2 -molecules disturb the symmetry of the crystal field at the centre of the double six membered rings of the faujasit structure. Comparing this with results obtained from samples containing water, ammonia or hydrogen sulphide, one sees that the disturbance of the symmetry in the above-mentioned sites is not only connected with the ability of proton donation or hydrogen bonding to the alumosilicate framework, but can also be affected by other polar molecules containing no protons. In contrast to the adsorption of water and ammonia, the sodium ions at the walls of the large cages are not solvated by SO 2
