A Class of Energetically Rigid Gravitational Fields

Abstract

In Einstein's theory, the physics of gravitational fields is reflected by the geometry of the curved space-time manifold. One of the methods for a study of the geometrical properties of space-time consists in regarding it, locally, as embedded in a higher-dimensional flat space. In this paper, metrics admitting a 3-parameter group of motion are considered which form a generalization of spherically symmetric gravitational fields. A subclass of such metrics can be embedded into a five- dimensional flat space. It is shown that the second fundamental form governing the embedding can be expressed entirely by the energy-momentum tensor of matter and the cosmological constant. Such gravitational fields are called energetically rigid. As an application gravitating perfect fluids are discussed.

Abstract

The Lehmann-Symanzik-Zimmermann (LSZ) technique has been used to calculate all τ -functions of the UN-sector of the Bronzan-Lee model. Using the prescription of Liossatos, the Z V → 0 limit has been carried out for the fourier transform of the τ-functions in the sector. These limiting functions τ̂ α,L UN are then compared with the τ̂ C,α UN functions derived from a composite model, proposed by the foregoing author, where V is considered to be a composite particle. It has been found that when the so called composite V-particle does not appear in the initial and the final states, these τ-functions coincide. On the other hand, the limiting values of some τ-functions differ from those of the composite model, when such particles appear in the final or initial states.

Abstract

The electronic triplet state sublevels of aromatic molecules generally have different energies already at zero external magnetic field. This zero field splitting usually is too small to be resolved by a high resolution optical spectrometer, and only a high magnetic field (typically 30 kG) yields enough Zeeman-splitting to allow full resolution. From the Zeeman pattern one can extract the absolute sign of the triplet parameter D, which probes the electronic wavefunction of the triplet state. Compared with purely optical methods with their inherent lack of resolution, we demonstrate that a double resonance method yields the sign of D even in relatively small magnetic fields due to the improved optical resolution. This double resonance method is a modification of Optical Detection of ESR (ODMR). Now the sign determination seems to be a routine procedure.

Abstract

Hyperfine structure and Zeeman effect of the 85 Rb 19 F molecule have been measured with a molecular beam apparatus using electric four poles as deflecting fields and homogeneous superimposed electric and magnetic fields in the transition region. Electric dipole transitions were induced between the hyperfine structure levels of the first rotational state J = 1 and the two lowest vibrational states υ = 0 and υ=1 for the strong field case. The following quantities were determined and are compared with results from weak field measurements: the magnetic rotational dipole moment µJ, the nuclear spin-rotational interactions c 1 , and c 2 (1⍙Rb, 2⍙F) the scalar and tensor part of the nuclear dipole-dipole interaction d s and d T , the quadrupole coupling constant eqQ of the Rb nucleus, the anisotropy of the magnetic susceptibility ξ ⊥ – ξ ∥ , the anisotropy of the magnetic shielding of the external magnetic field at the position of both nuclei (σ ⊥ –σ ∥ ) 1 and (σ ⊥ –σ ∥ ) 2 , the magnetic moment of the Rb nucleus multiplied by the scalar part of the magnetic shielding tensor µ 1 (1-σ) 1 .

Abstract

67 Zn nuclear magnetic resonance studies of various solutions of diverse zinc salts in H 2 O and D 2 O are reported. In the solutions of ZnI 2 , ZnBr 2 and ZnCl 2 a remarkable chemical shift to higher frequency is observable, whilst for Zn(ClO 4 ) 2 , Zn(NO 3 ) 2 and ZnSO 4 no shift is detectable. The 67 Zn shifts in zinc halide solutions depend on the isotopic composition of the solvent. The substitution of hydrogen by deuterium in the solvent yields for the 67 Zn line an anomalous solvent isotope effect to higher frequency. Moreover for increasing temperature a linear increase of the shift and a nonlinear decrease of the linewidth for the zinc halide solutions were observed. The ratio of the Larmor frequencies of 67 Zn and 37 Cl has been measured in an aqueous zinc perchlorate solution, and a magnetic moment has been calculated for 67 Zn. The shielding constant for the hydrated zinc ion has been evaluated: σ*(hydrated 67 Zn ++ versus 67 Zn atom) = − (6.9 ± 0.1) · 10 −4 .

Abstract

Paraelectric resonance spectra of beryl crystals are observed in the X-band region between 5 and 20 kV/cm under the condition that the external electric field F [101̅0]. Additional dielectric measurements show, that the paraelectric centres are the monomeric water molecules in the beryl cavities. For water dipoles in beryl only two orientations of the molecular a-axis relative to the crystal C 6 -axis are possible, and only those with their a-axis parallel to the C 6 -axis contribute to the paraelectric resonance effect. The electric moment vector µ of these latter molecules may rotate in the (0001)-crystal plane, i. e. around their own a-axis, and has a value of (1.9 ± 0.2) D. A theoretical description of paraelectric resonance is presented for a simplified model: the electric dipoles have 6 equivalent equilibrium positions along the [101̅0]-directions, tunnel effect and external electric fields remove the site degeneracy and we observe a molecular Stark splitting. We calculate a value of (2.0 ± 0.4) GHz for the zero-field splitting in the one-parameter Hamiltonian model.

Abstract

A simple model for the particle balance in a reflex discharge with a superimposed axial magnetic field is presented based upon the results found for the negative glow of an anomalous glow discharge. The electron density and temperature of hydrogen and helium discharges are determined as functions of the discharge current, pressure and magnetic field; the ion current of a cylindrical Langmuir probe is evaluated according to the theory of Laframboise. Additional information on the ion composition of the plasma is obtained by comparison of the probe measurement with interferometric microwave measurements. The reflex discharge produces a negative glow plasma with T e = 2000 - 3000 °K and densities up to n e = 10 13 cm -3 . For pressures below 0.01 Torr and strong magnetic fields the negative glow is transformed into a Penning discharge.

Abstract

Thermomagnetic effects in strong magnetic fields have been investigated in undoped Bi 95.5 Sb 4.5 single crystals. With respect to the high mobility of the charge carriers in Bi-Sb-alloys magnetic fields of a few kGauss have already to be regarded as strong fields. Quantum oscillations were observed in a field region up to 18 kGauss. On the basis of a free electron gas model a theory for the oscillatory behaviour of the thermoelectric power in strong magnetic fields was developed. With aid of this theory the experimental results were explained, and Fermi-energy, cyclotron mass and effective mass tensor were calculated. Different band models (EP, NEP, NENP) were discussed. In the present case the NENP-model shows the best agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract

The appropriateness of a suitably modified Varshni-Shukla potential has been tested for a series of alkali halide crystals by determining the numerical values of the potential parameters involved, using Hildebrand’s equation of state and thereby computing a few lattice properties. Comparison between the different sets of theoretical and experimental results infers that the present theoretical values exhibit an improvement over those of other workers, using a similar approach but with different potential energy functions. It is concluded that the modified V -S potential function is a good choice for explaining the behaviour of alkali halide lattices.

Abstract

The oxygen isotope fractionation factors between the hydration complex of the alkali ions in the gas phase and a free water molecule have been computed on the basis of the energy surfaces calculated by Kistenmacher, Popkie and Clementi for a water molecule in the field of an alkali ion. For comparison with recently measured oxygen isotope fractionation factors in aqueous alkali halide solutions, the gas phase values are multiplied with the corresponding separation factors between water vapor and liquid water thus relating the hydration complex in the gas phase with pure water. Qualitative agreement between computed and observed fractionation factors has been found for H 2 O and D 2 O even neglecting the isotope effect connected with the transfer of the hydration complex from the gas phase to the solution. This transfer effect is estimated for H 2 O by a quantitative comparison of computed and observed oxygen isotope fractionation factors.

Abstract

Transient molecular flow studies of CH 4 , CD 4 and mixtures using a Pyrex glass capillary were carried out under UHV-conditions at temperatures between 77.4 and 115 K and pressures between 10 -5 and 10 -3 Torr (10 -3 <0<10 -1 ). The simultaneous recording of different components of the gas mixtures is achieved by means of a quadrupole mass spectrometer. The temperature dependence of the observed adsorption isotope effects is discussed in terms of the changes of the internal and external vibrations of the molecules caused by adsorption. The behaviour of gas mixtures was simulated by a numerical calculation.

Abstract

The vibrational relaxation time in liquid carbontetrachloride (at 25 °C) has been investigated by Brillouin scattering for pressures ranging up to 1250 bars. From the relation between the liquid density (as a function of pressure) and the relaxation time the diameter of the CCl 4 -molecule has been calculated. It was found to be 5.31 ± 0.05 Å.

Abstract

The Monte-Carlo method is applied to a sample consisting of 256 linear point-quadrupoles, whose centers are fixed on a face-centered cubic lattice with the usual boundary conditions; the quadrupole interaction is characterized by an energy . The electrostatic energy is evaluated by means of Ewald-Kornfeld’s method. Results are given for energy, specific heat and order parameters and compared with previous papers on the subject. A first-order phase transition is found at T=(1±1)Γ/k B .

Abstract

Going out from the recorded line shapes, the true profiles of the vibrational band ν 22 (Eg) of cyclohexane and their half-widths are calculated in dependence of the temperature. The influence of the intrinsic line width turns out to be so small as to lie practically within the tolerance. The correlation functions of the true line profiles are found to be Lorentzian in good approximation. They are within the tolerance in conformity with the correlation functions of the orientational line shapes. Rotations of the C 6 H 12 -molecules around their C 2 -axes are supposed to be the cause for the occurring of a plastic phase.

The emission spectrum of an AlCl 3 arc plasma with core temperatures from 5600 to 6150 K is quantitatively measured in the wavelength region between 1800 and 8200 Å. In addition to the Al lines has been observed: The Cl affinity continuum, produced by the attachment of electrons to Cl atoms, the recombination continuum of the Al + ions, the continuous bremsstrahlung of the electrons in the field of the Al + ions, the continuous bremsstrahlung of the electrons in the field of the neutral Cl and Al atoms, and finally the association continuum of the AlCl + molecular ions, produced by the attachment of Al + ions to Cl atoms.

The electrical conductivity of the single-band Hubbard Hamiltonian is calculated by use of the Boltzmann-Transport-Equation. We lean on the antiferromagnetic approach to this Hamiltonian. We obtain a semiconductor with an energy gap due to the electronic correlations and a semiconductor to metal transition at the Néel temperature T N .

Abstract

We have extended Haeberlen’s and Maier’s NMR investigation of the molecular rotation in solid polycrystalline benzene (C 6 H 6 ), performed in 1967 in the Larmor frequency range from 88 MHz to 22 MHz, to lower frequencies down to 4.4 MHz. In some cases monocrystalline samples were also studied. The extensive data show that the presently accepted model of purely uncorrected rotations of the benzene molecules around their sixfold axis has to be rejected. Instead, two results found, namely - a slight increase of the rotational activation energy when approaching the melting point of benzene and - the width of the T 1 relaxation minima as a function of the reciprocal temperature suggest an additional relevance of correlated molecular motions, like e.g. the ‘gear-wheel mechanism’ first proposed by Cox. By appropriate modifications of Haeberlen’s theory, i.e. by assuming a rate equation with temperature dependent activation energy and by emphasizing the effect of simultaneous rotations of neighbouring rings compared with the purely statistical, uncorrelated case, we succeeded to describe the considered T 1 measurements quantitatively.

Abstract

The finite extension of the classical electron is defined in a new, covariant manner. This new definition enables one to calculate exactly the bound and emitted four-momentum and to find an equation of motion different from the Lorentz-Dirac equation and from other equations proposed in the literature. Neither mass renormalization nor use of advanced quantities nor asymptotic conditions are necessary. Runaway solutions and pre-acceleration do not occur in the framework of the model presented here.

An attempt is made calculate the 13 C-shifts of E- and Z-Oximes from their σ Dia - and σ para- shift term. The charge densities used in the shift terms are calculated by the CNDO/II-method. Abstract

We measured the 9 Be photoneutron production cross section σ(γ, T, n) = σ(γ, n) + 2 σ(γ, 2n) + σ(γ, pn) in the energy range from 17 -25 MeV with quasimonoenergetic photons from positron annihilation in flight. In contrast to experiments of Thomas, Crawford and Thies (1972) and Hughes (1973), performed with bremsstrahlung photon sources we found no pronounced structure in this energy range.

Abstract

The properties of a low-pressure non-thermal He-plasma jet have been investigated. The gas temperature was obtained from the population densities of high excited He-levels. The electron density was determined both from the Stark-effect broadening of some He-lines and from the intensities of some forbidden transitions. The radial distribution of electron temperature was found by comparing the computed population densities of the He 3 1 P level with the experimental values.

Abstract

With the new saturation modulation the rotational spectrum of BaO was measured. The accuracy of the derived molecular constants is about an order of magnitude higher than in previous studies and some discrepancies are removed. It was demonstrated that measurements of the electric dipole moment are possible with microwave spectroscopy up to temperatures of 2000 K.

Abstract

By using a conductometric method, the kinetics of the basic hydrolysis of benzyl benzoate in water-alcohol medium has been investigated. The second order rate constant follows the equation K = A exp {-E/RT} with A = 1.35·10 10 l mol -1 min -1 and E = 14.5 kcal mol -1 . A reaction mechanism is postulated, which is consistent with the experimental data.
