Abstract

The group-theoretical basis for the angular momentum reduction of the spinor Bethe-Salpeter equation is discussed. We construct amplitude of definite angular momentum by analogy to the nonrelativistic problem and discuss the differences. The additional decomposition because of discrete symmetries is explained. Finally, we relate the states to those obtained in the non-relativistic quark model.

Abstract

Consequences of the Fundamental Inequality An important feature of the entropyfree thermodynamics of processes is the well-known fundamental inequality. In the case of simple thermodynamic materials and on certain analytical assump-tions we deduce from it the representation of the constitutive equations for processes which remain sufficiently close to an equilibrium state. We further consider materials which are of the differential type and of complexity one. It is shown that for such materials the equilibrium entropy, which can be used as a well-defined auxiliary function during a process, can be regarded as a possible entropy in non-equilibrium. This theorem is only based on the validity of the fundamental inequality. It is therefore an improvement of the theorem of Keller and König.

Abstract

Starting from the linearized Klimontovich equations and the pair approximation we study the probability distribution of the electric microfield. We deduce the separation of the total microfield distribution into a high and a low frequency component. We further prove that each of these com-ponents can be calculated from a model of uncorrelated, dynamically screened particles. The low frequency component, which is of prominent interest for applications, is evaluated. The results show devations from all earlier theories.

Abstract

We study the possibility to construct an adiabatic invariant for charged particles in electromagnetic fields, that vary strongly in space but only slowly in time (measured by a small parameter ε). We specialize to those fields, where the motion of the particle is described by a Hamiltonian that corresponds to a one-dimensional oscillator with a potential exhibiting two minima. This type of potential can occur in the case of one-dimensional fields with neutral sheets. The action integral I=∮ p dq is no longer an adiabatic invariant for particles with an energy near the value of the inner maximum of the potential, nor is it a continuous function of the energy. The second difficulty can be removed by proper redefinition. Then by using the area conservation in the phase plane it can be shown that for any arbitrary particle ensemble in the phase plane of the one-dimensional oscillator the mean value of the action integral is adiabaticly invariant to order ε ln 4 ε. Under certain circumstances it can happen that a coherent ensemble splits up into two separated groups. It will be shown that this also can be understood essentially as an adiabatic process.

Abstract

We report on measurements of the Larmor frequency dependence of the proton spin relaxation time T 1 in the nematic and isotropic phase of p-azoxyanisole (frequency range: 3.8 kHz ≦ ωL/2 π≦75 MHz) . In both cases our results clearly support the Pincus-Cahane mechanism of spin relaxation by order fluctuations ("ω L − ½ -law") and exclude the alternative translational diffusion model (“ω L + ½ -law”). For the isotropic phase it was possible to evaluate the correlation time τ of the liquid crystalline order fluctuations from the observed T 1 dispersion. As a function of the deviation ⊿ν=ν-ν c from the critical nematic-isotropic transition temperature, ν c= (136± 0.5)°C, we found τ=2.71·10 -7 -⊿ν-0.25 s .

Abstract

We have studied collisional depolarization of resonance radiation with special attention given to the line wings. It is shown that in the one particle quasistatic limit the fluorescence radiation is completely depolarized, independently of frequency and perturber density. By comparison with the integrated polarization degree it is concluded, that the polarization state of the radiation must exhibit a frequency dependence.

Abstract

A new method for the determination of f-values of resonance transitions from wing-measurements of selfbroadened resonance absorption lines is described. The method is applied to the mercury resonance transition 6 1 S 0 →6 1 P 1 , λ 1850 Å. The resulting f-value of 1.08±0.05 agrees well with those obtained from other methods.

Abstract

A selfconsistent solution with respect to both free and bound electron energy states is presented for a low temperature monatomic plasma. The deviations from a Maxwellian electron distribution under the action of unbalanced resonance transitions of the plasma atoms are incorporated in analytical form using a recursion formula, which links the high energy tail of the electron distribution function to its low energy part. The unbalance of the resonance level may be due to diffusion processes and/or radiation escape, which reflect the influence of the plasma boundaries. The population densities of the bound electron energy states are numerically determined by an iteration procedure. The calculations were performed for a cesium plasma both without and with consideration of resonance level diffusion and ambipolar diffusion. As is to be expected, the effect of a disturbance of the electron distribution on the population densities increases with decreasing electron density and increasing electron temperature.

Abstract

The effects of the finite Larmor radius of the ions on the thermal instability of a plasma are investigated. When the instability sets in as stationary convection, the finite Larmor radius is found to have a stabilizing effect. The conditions for the nonexistence of overstability are investigated. The case with horizontal magnetic field is discussed.

Abstract

Measurement of Excitation Temperatures in a Glow Discharge Lamp Excitation temperatures indicated from Fe-I and Fe-II spectral lines have been measured in a glow discharge lamp using relative intensities of 49 selected spectral lines. Different excitation temperatures resulted: the temperatures were in the range of 3000 -5000 K (Fe-I lines) and 20000 K (Fe-II lines). The former are hardly, the latter ones strongly affected by discharge parameters. The results are discussed.

Abstract

Recrystallized nickel foils were treated by oxygen (2·10 -4 Torr up to 10 -3 Torr) at temperatures up to 550 °C within an electron diffraction set. The treatment was done isothermal and isobaric during few minutes up to several hours. The change in structure was observed. Additional reflexions occured and could be interpreted as due to double reflexion. Under the conditions mentioned above nickel changed into nickel monoxide directly, i. e. without formation of sub-oxides or other intermediate phases. This is in accordance with the fact that up to now no sub-oxides to the transition metals of group VIII a have been found.

Abstract

A pure iodine plasma is generated by a cylindric arc at 1 atm and 6 to 30 amps within a quartz tube of 8 mm diameter. The radiation emitted along the arc axis was measured absolutely in the wavelength range from 0.2 -1.9 μ. In the uv-region it consists mainly of the affinity continuum due to transitions of free electrons to the ground level of the negative iodine ions. The first threshold of this continuum at 4048 Å yields an electron affinity of the iodine atom of 3.062 eV. The resulting photodetachment cross-section of the I - -ion exhibits a broad peak at 2400 Å, which can be attributed to a I - -compound-state. The continuous background radiation in the visible and infrared regions shows, after subtraction of the electron-ion continuum, two long-wavelength thresholds near 1.25 μ and 0.64 μ. The absolute intensity of this radiation, its wavelength and temperature dependence and its threshold energy and threshold structure suggest the contribution of two dominant radiation processes: a second affinity continuum due to an excited state of the I - -ion about 2 eV above the ground level and an association continuum of I 2 + -molecules. Towards longer wavelengths λ>1.5 μ electron-atom Bremsstrahlung becomes more important.

Abstract

Recent X-ray diffraction data on molten noble and transition metals have been used to calculate effective interionic potentials by means of the Born-Green equation. The results on the noble metals are compared with the generalized pseudopotential calculations of Moriarty. In all cases the potentions were found to be insensitive to temperature and to have long-range oscillations. The results suggest that the effective valence number is close to unity in these molten metals, this giving reasonable values of the electrical resistivity when calculated in the framework of the usual Ziman theory. The self-diffusion coefficients, viscosities and surface tensions were calculated from the poten-tials and radial distribution functions using the kinetic theory of fluids. Adequate agreement with experimental data was obtained.

Abstract

In this paper, some aspects of the isotropic and anisotropic yield conditions are discussed on the base of the plastic potential by introduction of partial potentials. The significance of the Bauschinger-Effect is investigated, in order to describe the mechanical behavior of materials in which the magnitude of the uniaxial yield strength depends on the sign of stress. This generalized concept is successfully applied to titanium sheets. The theory is compared with experimental results.

Abstract

The dependence of the sensitized injection current and of the crystal's sensitized delayed fluorescence on the electric and magnetic field is utilized to examine the process of charge separa-tion at the phase boundary crystal/water electrode. Hole currents, sensitized by electron transfer interaction between rhodamine B molecules in their lowest excited singlet state and the anthracene crystal, can be shown to originate from a thermal injection process. This conclusion is further supported by the changed phenomenology of the injection current and the delayed fluorescence in the presence of molecular oxygen in the aqueous electrode. In this case an alternative injection reaction predominates due to the oxygen enhancement of the intersystem crossing rate and thus of the sensitized population of triplet excitons in the crystal, the latter ones injecting holes through electron transfer to oxygen present at the surface. Neglecting image-and Coulomb forces at the interface crystal/electrolyte, an analytical ex-pression for the current-voltage relation can be given which includes the influence of the space charge. This expression does well agree with the experimental current-voltage characteristics ob-served for different surface recombination rates of charge carriers.

Abstract

Several methods of studying the elastic behaviour of nematic liquid crystals by means of measuring the electric conductivity are discussed. The temperature dependence of the ratio of the splay and bend elastic constants to the anisotropy of the magnetic susceptibility is determined for N-(p-methoxybenzylidene) -p-n-butylaniline (MBBA), N-(p-ethoxybenzylidene) -p-n-butylaniline (EBBA) and mixtures of both.

Abstract

Quantitative results are reported on the influence of a homogeneous magnetic field upon the torsional shear flow of a homeotropic layer at 22.5 °C. In subcritical fields H x parallel to the layer, as well as in weak fields H z normal to the layer, one gets K 3 /μ 0 X a = 3.76±0.2 A 2 . In oblique magnetic fields (H x , 0, H z ) one obtains (λ 2 -λ 1 )/μ 0 X a =(11.7±0.4)x10 10 A 2 m -2 s. In addition, a hysteresis effect in supercritical fields H x and the formation of a long and straight magnetic wall are described. The magnetic wall becomes distorted under the action of the shear flow. Hereby a new domain can be produced which has a 180° inversion wall parallel to the boundaries of the layer.

Abstract

Superconducting niobium carbonitride wires Nb(C y N x ) has been prepared by a diffusion process in two steps, first diffusing carbon from methane into niobium wires and then nitrogen into these carbonized samples. The optimum conditions for these preparations have been investigated in detail. All samples have been analysed quantitatively for C, N and Nb. The carbonizing as well as the following nitriding of the wires has been investigated under various conditions. The maximum of the transition temperature of the Nb(C y N x ) wires prepared by this two steps diffusion process is reached for the same composition y, x as for sintered samples. But the value is about 0.4 K lower.

Abstract

Measurements on the conductance of dilute solutions of sodium Perchlorate, at 35 °C, in water-sulfolane mixtures over the entire solvent composition range are reported. Experimental data were analyzed by the 1965 Fuoss-Onsager-Skinner equations. No detectable ion association was found for this electrolyte, unlike sodium chloride in the same solvent mixtures. The association order K A (Cl - )>K A (ClO 4 - ) is in contrast with that observed in protic solvents [K A (ClO 4 - )>K A (Cl - )] and is similar to that found in aprotic solvents. This shows that in water-sulfolane mixtures, association phenomena are mainly controlled by sulfolane. The lack of transport numbers for water-sulfolane mixtures precludes unambiguous explanations for Waiden products A 0 η.

Abstract

The dispersion of polaritons of symmetry A 1 and E is investigated in the region of four isotopic vibrations originating from C 13 - and N 15 -atoms in their natural abundances. The measured dispersion curves are explained in terms of a theory for localized mode polaritons (LMP) developed by Ohtaka. The dispersion relation is generalized for a polyatomic crystal and applied to K 3 Cu(CN) 4 . The comparison of experimental data with calculated dispersion curves shows a quite satisfying agreement for a certain value of the coupling constant which is approximately the same for E-type and A 1 -type polaritons.

Abstract

The microwave spectra of the two 79 Br and 81 Br isotopic species of 2-bromothiophene have been measured in the region 18000-40000 MHz. For both isotopic species, the rotational constants of the ground state and one vibrationally excited state were determined, as well as the centrifugal distortion coefficients of the ground state. The ground state rotational constants in MHz are as follows: C 4 H 3 32 S 79 Br C 4 H 3 32 S 81 Br A = 5403.432 ±0.111 5403.563 ±0.095, B = 1139.0689±0.0010 1126.5173±0.0011 C = 940.5142±0.0018 931.9315±0.0009. In order to perform a second-order perturbation treatment of the quadrupole interaction, the matrix elements of products of direction cosines in terms of the symmetric top wave functions have been derived. By the first-and second-order perturbation analysis of the hyperfine splittings of the rotational lines, the nuclear quadrupole coupling constants have been determined. The values in MHz are X aa = 592.7 ±1.5 493.7 ±1.5, X bb = -295.3 ±0.6 -245.6 ±0.7, X cc = -297.4 ±1.6 -248.1 ±1.6, X ab = 80 ±9 64±8 , in the principal axes system of the molecule.

Abstract

Gas electron diffraction (GED) intensities of CSFCl were measured and resulted in an r a - structure of this molecule. An r av -structure was obtained by combining our GED-data and the rotational constants reported by Kohrmann and Zeil. Both structures were found to be consistent within their uncertainties. The planar structure of CSFCl has been confirmed. A least squares analysis resulted in the following r g -distances and bond angles: r(C-Cl) =1.7178±0.0009 Å, r(C=S) =1.5931 ±0.0008 Å, r(C-F) =1.3387±0.0014 Å, ∢ S = (C-Cl)=127.28 ± 0.09°, ∢(S=C-F)= 123.58 ±0.12°. Inclusion of rotational constants into the GED-analysis allowed an experimental determination of all mean square amplitudes (MSA). We have used the valence force constants obtained by Kohrmann to evaluate the MSA theoretically. Qualitative agreement was found between the theoretical and experimental values of the MSA.

Abstract

By means of a thermal diffusion column the range of the radiocarbon dating method can be extended by about 20 000 years. In order to calculate suitable dimensions and operation conditions, a theory of nonlinear enrichment is derived. On the basis of a formula which describes the dependence of the enrichment factor on time and the characteristic values of the column, a con-centric column of 11m length was constructed. The enrichment factors obtained for 13 CH4 as a function of time (up to 400 h) and pressure (150 -1500 Torr) and for 14 CH 4 at 740 Torr and up to 1000 h are presented and discussed. A method is described to indirectly determine the enrichment factor in the stationary state and the characteristic time.

Abstract

Diffusion in an (n+1) -component system is described by Onsager's flow equations the integration of which leads in the case of quasi-stationarity to the differential equations d(Δc)/dt=-βD̅Δ c (Δc: vector of concentration differences between the compartments of the cell, D̅: matrix of integral diffusion coefficients, β: apparatus constant). Several procedures are known to determine these diffusion coefficients from such equations but all of them have certain disadvantages. In this paper a new method is described to compute the integral diffusion coefficients, which starts from the associated equivalent system of integral equations. The mathematical formalism is simple, and its numerical performance does not become more difficult with an increasing number of components of the system.

Abstract

The trichloroethanes undergo rapid dehydrochlorination in the presence of porous transitional aluminas, at temperatures as low as 80 °C. Attempts to measure their heats of adsorption on these solids above 80 °C are therefore unsuccessful. Silica gel is an inactive dehydrochlorination catalyst, and the heat of adsorption of 1,1,2-trichloroethane measured for this material is reported.
