Abstract

We present the structure elucidation of a copper(I) complex of a monoanionic phosphanylalkyl-diimido sulfonate ligand centered by a sulfur-copper cube. It has the formula [{Me 2 PCH 2 S(NSiMe 3 ) 2 } 4 Cu 8 {CuS} 4 ] (2) and is the first example of a copper(I) complex of this new ligand type. Abstract

The Ce 3 Pd 6 Sb 5 -type antimonides RE 3 Pd 6 Sb 5 (RE = Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb) were synthesized by arc-melting and subsequent annealing in sealed silica ampoules in a high-frequency furnace. The new compounds Sm 3 Pd 6 Sb 5 (a = 1337.0(5), b = 441.5(1), c = 988.6(3) pm) and Tb 3 Pd 6 Sb 5 (a = 1328.8(4), b = 439.9(2), c = 976.6(5) pm) were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction data. The RE 3 Pd 6 Sb 5 antimonides adopt an ordered defect structure that derives from the CaBe 2 Ge 2 type. Their crystal chemistry is compared to the structures of Ce 8 Rh 17 Sb 14 and Yb 5 Cu 11 Sn 8 on the basis of group-subgroup schemes. Temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility data of the samples with RE = Pr, Nd and Gd show Curie-Weiss paramagnetism of the trivalent rare earths. Low-field susceptibility measurements reveal magnetic ordering at low temperatures. Abstract

The gold-rich intermetallic compound SrAu 4.76 In 1.24 was synthesized by high-frequence-melting of the elements in a sealed tantalum tube and subsequent annealing. The structure was refined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data: YbMo 2 Al 4 -type, I4/mmm, Z = 2, a = 718.77(7), c = 552.79(9) pm, wR2 = 0.0760, 149 F 2 values and 11 parameters. The 4d (0.62 In + 0.38 Au) Wyckoff position shows mixed occupancy leading to the composition SrAu 4.76 In 1.24 for the investigated crystal. The strontium atoms are located in a large cage built up by 12 Au + 8 In atoms. The gold and indium atoms show segregation into substructures. The striking structural motifs are Au 4 squares (278 pm Au-Au) and indium chains (276 pm In-In). The squares and chains are connected via weaker Au-Au (299 pm) and Au-In (295 pm) bonds to a three-dimensional network. The In chains show the motif of rod packing. Electronic structure calculations show anisotropy within the structure with different responses to compressions along In-In chains and Au planes, also illustrated by the electron localization contour plots. The metallic behavior is found to be of itinerant electron type (like Cu), and the chemical bonding includes stabilizing Au-In interactions. Abstract

Transparent and colorless single crystals of the compounds Sr 4 OBr 2.89(2) Cl 3.11(2) and Ba 2 OBr 2 were obtained by solid-state reactions of SrCl 2 , SrBr 2 and SrO (3 : 3 : 2 molar ratio) or by using an excess of BaO together with BaBr 2 and Ba as a flux with the molar ratio 3 : 2 : 2, respectively. Ba 2 OBr 2 crystals are isopointal to K 2 ZnO 2 adopting the orthorhombic space group Ibam (no. 72, Z = 4) with the cell parameters a = 7247.44(10), b = 1297.76(20) and c = 657.43(10) pm. Sr 4 OBr 2.89(2) Cl 3.11(2) is isotypic to Ba 4 OCl 6 (or isopointal to K 6 ZnO 4 ) and crystallizes in the hexagonal space group P6 3 mc (no. 186, Z = 2) with the cell parameters a = 982.20(4) and c = 750.41(7) pm. Abstract

Measurements of the thermopower and of the thermal diffusivity and a detailed analysis of the structural features by temperature-dependent single-crystal structure determinations of silver ionconducting Ag 5 Te 1.8 Se 0.2 Cl and Ag 5 Te 1.6 Se 0.4 Cl were performed to investigate the interaction of silver ions in their disordered state. The substituted phases show an order/disorder phase transition at 273.3(2) and 302.5(2) K, respectively, accompanied by a drop of the thermal diffusivity and a minimum plateau of the thermopower right after the transition. Silver ions are arranged in welldefined strands along the crystallographic c axis characterized by a set of not fully occupied sites. Ag 5 Te 1.6 Se 0.4 Cl shows a negative thermal expansion during temperature rise right after the silver order/disorder phase transition; this is explicable by attractive d 10 -d 10 interactions within the disordered silver substructure. After the minimum values of the thermopower have been reached, these values rise in parallel to the decrease of the d 10 -d 10 interactions. Ag 5 Te 1.6 Se 0.4 Cl shows a very low value of the thermal diffusivity of 0.070 mm 2 s −1 at 300.7 K. Abstract

Three new ternary mixed lanthanum stannide/germanides have been synthesized and characterized in the course of a systematic study of the phase formation at the 3 : 5, 3 : 4 and 1 : 1 pseudo-binary sections of the ternary system La - Ge - Sn, i. e. a study of the ’coloring’ in mixed tetrelides. The structures of the title compounds have been determined using single-crystal X-ray data, and the electronic structure was analyzed by means of simple electron counting rules and FP-LAPW band structure methods. Even a very minor substitution of Sn by Ge in the 3 : 5 stannide La 3 Sn 5 already changes the structure from the Pu 3 Pd 5 type of the binary stannide towards the Tl 4 PbTe 3 type (La 3 Sn 4.4 Ge 0.6 : tetragonal, space group I4/mcm, a = 861.35(10), c = 1211.48(13) pm, Z = 4, R1 = 0.0420). According to the anionic building blocks present, isolated [Ge/Sn] 4 − anions and heavily puckered 4.8 2 nets of three-bonded tin atoms (i. e. [Sn 4 ] 4− Zintl ions), a small formal electron excess (+9/−8) occurs, which is also apparent from the position of the minimum in the calculated tDOS. In contrast, starting from the known binary stannide La 3 Sn 4 (orthorhombic, space group Cmcm, Er 3 Ge 4 structure type) a substitution of tin by germanium is possible without a change of the structure type up to the border composition La 3 Sn 3.1 Ge 0.9 (a = 448.61(5), b = 1170.68(14), c = 1556.0(2) pm, Z = 4, R1 = 0.0380). Germanium preferentially occupies the sites of the [Ge/Sn] 3 trimers, whereas the site of the square-planar coordinated Sn(3), which is stabilized by hypervalent bonding, is not populated by germanium. Taking the respective partial bonding into account, the Zintl electron count is also nearly exact (+9/−8). The new complex mixed tetrelide La 9 Sn 6.7 Ge 3.3 (tetragonal, space group P4 2 /ncm, a = 1602.04(3), c = 1724.42(5) pm, Z = 8, R1 = 0.0706) exhibits nine crystallographically different tetrel positions, which are occupied by isolated Sn and Ge atoms, [Sn/Ge] 2 dumbbells, bent [Sn 3 ] trimers, planar four-membered rings [Ge 4 ], and planar six-membered rings [M 6 ]. In this compound, the electron count following the Zintl concept also reveals only a very small formal excess of electrons (+54/−52). Abstract

A new 3d-4 f heteronuclear coordination polymer containing cobalt and neodymium, [Nd 2 Co 3 (oda) 6 (H 2 O) 6 ]·3H 2 O} n (1) (H 2 oda = oxydiacetic acid), has been synthesized and structurally characterized. In 1, the oxydiacetate dianions (oda 2− ) act as pentadentate ligands, and each of them chelates one Nd 3+ ion and bridges two Co 2+ ions. The infinite connection of metal ions and ligands results in a highly ordered 3D hexagonal channel framework. The photoluminescent, EPR and magnetic properties of the complex were also investigated. Abstract

Two silver(I) tetrachlorophthalates incorporating aminopyrimidyl ligands, namely [Ag 4 (apym) 4 (tcpta) 2 ] n (1) and [Ag 2 (dmapym)(tcpta)] n (2), (apym = 2-aminopyrimidine, dmapym = 2-amino-4,6-dimethylpyrimidine, H 2 tcpta = tetrachlorophthalic acid), were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Both 1 and 2 form sheets which are assembled into 3D supramolecular frameworks via halogen bonds, hydrogen bonds and π...π interactions. Even adding two more methyl groups to the pyrimidyl ring does not change the dimensions of 1 and 2, but it influences the arrangement of the N- and O-donors in the solid state which in turn results in different types of halogen bonds. The photoluminescence properties of 1 and 2 were investigated in the solid state at room temperature. Abstract

Two highly unstable copper(I) salts, i. e. copper(I) bisulfate tetraacetonitrile, [Cu(CH 3 CN) 4 ]HSO 4 , and dicopper(I) sulfate octaacetonitrile, [Cu(CH 3 CN) 4 ] 2 SO 4 , and their stable derivatives with 2,9- dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline (DMPhen) have been prepared in pure form and characterized by elemental, spectral and chemical analysis. Single-crystal X-ray studies of [Cu(CH 3 CN) 4 ]HSO 4 and its derivative [Cu(DMPhen) 2 ]HSO 4 have been carried out. The solution behavior of both of these salts and their derivatives have been investigated using UV/Vis, IR, 63 Cu NMR spectroscopy and molar conductance in a number of non-aqueous solvents. Furthermore, a simple method for the preparation of Cu 2 SO 4 is presented. Abstract

A new complex of Cd(II) picrate (pic) based on the ligand 2,6-bis(N-methylbenzimidazol-2-yl)- pyridine (mbbp) has been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, electrical conductivity, 1 H NMR, IR and UV/Vis spectral measurements. The crystal structure of the Cd(II) complex, [Cd(mbbp) 2 ](pic) 2 , has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The Cd(II) cation is bonded to two mbbp ligands through six nitrogen atoms, resulting in a distorted octahedral geometry. Interaction of the complex with DNA was investigated by spectrophotometric methods and viscosity measurements. The experimental results suggest that the Cd(II) complex binds to DNA in an intercalation mode. Abstract

The reaction of 5(4H)-oxazolones with tetraethyl methanediylbis(phosphonate) afforded new 1,1-bisphosphonate and 1,1-bisphosphonic acid derivatives. Moreover, 5(4H)-oxazolones reacted with Wittig reagents to give the corresponding heterocyclic products. Treatment of 5(4H)-oxazolones with trisdialkylaminophosphanes gave the corresponding N-(1-dialkylcarbamoyl)-2-phenylvinylbenzamides. Mechanisms accounting for the formation of the new products are discussed. The biological activity of the newly synthesized compounds was also examined. Abstract

We synthesized a series of fluorinated compounds and tested them in an easy assay for their repellent activity against the ant Myrmica rubra. Depending on their chain length and pattern of fluorination these molecules are efficient repellents for this ant. Fluorinated compounds are stronger repellents than their unfluorinated analogs. 1,1,1-Trifluorotridecan-2-one (4) is an even better repellent against M. rubra than “gold standard” N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET). Abstract

A new triterpenoid alkaloid, 16-deacetoxy-hyrcamine (1), together with six analogs, was isolated from the leaves and stems of Buxus sempervirens. Their structures were elucidated based on spectral methods and by comparison of the spectral data with those reported previously. All isolated compounds were evaluated for their growth inhibitory activity against human cell lines HL-60, SMMC-7721, A-549,MCF-7, and SW480. Abstract

The results of a calculation of 15 N NMR parameters (chemical shifts and coupling constants) of azides and related compounds are in reasonably good agreement with experimental data, even for triazadienyl fluoride, F - N 3 . The reaction between [CH 3 ] + and nitrous oxide, N 2 O, can yield either an O - or an N-methylated cation, [Me(N 2 O)] + . The calculated 15 N NMR parameters clearly indicate that under the experimental conditions N-methylation to give [MeNNO] + is preferred instead of the methoxydiazonium ion [MeONN] + previously proposed.
