Abstract

The reaction of Bi, BiBr 3 , and CuBr in the Lewis-acidic ionic liquid [BMIm]Br·4AlBr 3 (BMIm = 1- n -butyl-3-limidazolium) at 180 °C yielded air-sensitive, shiny black crystals of (CuBi 8 )[AlBr 4 ] 2 [Al 2 Br 7 ]. Crystals of [ M Bi 10 ][AlCl 4 ] 4 ( M = Pd, Pt) were obtained by reacting Bi, BiCl 3 , and M Cl 2 under similar conditions. The structures have been determined by X-ray diffraction on single-crystals and were found to be very similar to that of the known analogues with other halogens, although not isostructural. In crystals of the complex salts, polyhedral bimetallic clusters (CuBi 8 ) 3+ or [ M Bi 10 ] 4+ are embedded in matrices of halogenidoaluminate anions. The heteroatomic nido -cluster (CuBi 8 ) 3+ consists of a (Bi 8 ) 2+ square antiprism η 4 -coordinating a copper(I) cation. In the cluster cation [ M Bi 10 ] 4+ , the metal atoms M center a pentagonal antiprism of bismuth atoms.

Abstract

Potassium 15-crown-5 phenanthrenide and potassium 18-crown-6 phenanthrenide were synthesized and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction and 39 K solid state NMR spectroscopy. While the radical carbanion is very reactive in solution, the crystals are stable and storable under inert atmosphere. For 15-crown-5, a sandwich-like complex of potassium is formed with two molecules of crown ether per potassium resulting in a coordination number of 10. For the larger 18-crown-6 ligand, a 1:1 complex is obtained and a coordination number of 6 for the potassium cation. In neither crystal structure solvent molecules are incorporated. The 15-crown-5 compound crystallizes faster and is less soluble in THF as compared to the 18-crown-6 compound. Both compounds form solid phenanthrenide that is easy to handle and can be applied for reduction reactions.

Abstract

The title compounds were prepared by precipitation from acidic solutions of the reactants in acetone/water. Bi(S 2 CNH 2 ) 2 Cl ( 1 ) crystallizes in the non-centrosymmetric trigonal space group P 3 2 with a = 8.6121(3) and c = 11.1554(4) Å, Z = 3; Bi(S 2 NH 2 ) 2 SCN ( 2 ) in P 2 1 / c (monoclinic) with a = 5.5600(2), b = 14.3679(5), c = 12.8665(4) Å, and β = 90.37(3)°. In the crystal structure of 1 Bi 3+ is in a sevenfold coordination of two bidentate and one monodentate S 2 CHNH 2 − anions with an asymmetric coordination pattern of five Bi–S and two Bi–Cl − bonds. The linkage of these polyhedra via common Cl–S edges leads to a 1D polymeric structure with undulated chains propagating in the direction [001]. These chains are linked by strong and medium strong hydrogen bonds forming the 3D crystal structure. In the crystal structure of 2 the Bi 3+ cation is in an eightfold coordination. The polyhedron can be described as a significantly distorted tetragonal anti-prism, capped by an additional S atom. Two of these prisms share a common quadrilateral face to form a “prism-double” (Bi 2 S 10 N 2 ). These building units are linked by common edges, and the resulting 1D infinite angulated chains propagate along [100]. By contrast to organo-dithiocarbamate compounds, where C– H···X bridges are dominant, the interchain connections in the crystal structures of 1 and 2 are formed exclusively via N–H···S, N–H···Cl, and N–H···N interactions, generating the 3D networks. A significant eccentricity of the Bi 3+ cation in the crystal structures of both complexes is observed. Both compounds emit light in the orange range of the electromagnetic spectrum.

Abstract

The dissolution of alkaline-earth metal carbonate in aqueous picric acid followed by reaction with nicotinamide results in the formation of [M(H 2 O) n (nic) 2 (pic) 2 ] (nic = nicotinamide; pic = picrate; n = 1 and M = Ba 1 ; n = 2 and M = Ca (or Sr) 2 (or 3 )). In [Ba(H 2 O)(nic) 2 (pic) 2 ] 1 , the barium and the oxygen atoms of a terminal aqua ligand are located on a two-fold axis. Compound 1 exhibits a {BaO 7 N 2 } coordination sphere, where the barium atom is bonded to a unique bidentate picrate and the crystallographically independent nicotinamide bridges to two symmetry related barium atoms with a Ba···Ba separation of 9.799 Å via the pyridine nitrogen and the amide oxygen atoms leading to the formation of a two-dimensional coordination polymer. The compounds 2 and 3 are isostructural with discrete molecules. The central Ca atom in 2 (or Sr in 3 ) located on a two-fold axis is bonded to a crystallographically unique terminal aqua ligand, an independent monodentate nicotinamide and a unique bidentate picrate anion resulting in a distorted {MO 8 } polyhedron. The mixed ligand alkaline-earth metal picrates 1–3 exhibit three varieties of hydrogen bonding and π–π stacking interactions. Several alkaline-earth metal picrates are compared in this study.

Abstract

The crystal structure of natural krautite, MnHAsO 4 (H 2 O), was re-evaluated from a cotype specimen, confirming the previously reported monoclinic symmetry for this mineral (space group P 2 1 , Z = 8, a = 8.0093(5), b = 15.9372(10), c = 6.8065(4) Å, β = 96.534(2)° at room temperature, 5662 structure factors, 302 parameters, R 1 = 0.0295, wR 2 = 0.0770). Although hydrogen atoms could not be located from the single crystal X-ray diffraction study, the higher accuracy and precision of the results allowed to derive the hydrogen-bonding scheme (O⋯O = 2.55–2.90 Å) in the crystal structure of krautite. Crystals of synthetic MnHAsO 4 (H 2 O) were grown by mixing aqueous solutions of NH 4 H 2 AsO 4 and MnSO 4 and keeping the formed gel at 105 °C for several days. The obtained triclinic crystals were systematically and polysynthetically twinned by contact on (010). Separation of reflections from two individual domains made it possible to determine and refine the crystal structure (space group P 1 ‾ $P\overline{1}$ , Z = 8, a = 8.0105(16), b = 15.991(4), c = 6.8029(12) Å, α = 92.635(8), β = 96.534(2), γ = 90.151(8)° at room temperature, 7226 structure factors, 255 parameters, R 1 = 0.0445, wR 2 = 0.1381). The triclinic polymorph of MnHAsO 4 (H 2 O) does not show a direct group-subgroup relation with monoclinic krautite. Triclinic MnHAsO 4 (H 2 O) is closely related with other triclinic M II HAsO 4 (H 2 O) ( M = Co, Cu, Zn, Mg) mineral phases. Quantitative structural comparisons between the five M II HAsO 4 (H 2 O) compounds revealed a high similarity between the Mn and Co members, and between the Zn and Mg members, respectively. Subtle distinctions between the two pairs are ascribed to a different hydrogen-bonding scheme. Although the Cu member has a similar hydrogen-bonding scheme as the Mn and Co pair, its structural similarity with triclinic MnHAsO 4 (H 2 O) is low due to the strain of the crystal structure caused by the Jahn-Teller distortions of the [CuO 6 ] octahedra.

Abstract

Solvothermal reaction of Bi(NO 3 ) 3 ·5H 2 O with the flexible ligand 1,3,5-tris[4-(carboxyphenyl)oxamethyl]-2,4,6-trimethylbenzene (H 3 TBTC) in methanol at 120 °C for 1 h led to the formation of a novel coordination polymer (CP) with the composition of Bi(TBTC). The structure of the microcrystalline material was determined through three-dimensional electron diffraction (3DED) measurements and phase purity was confirmed by a Pawley refinement, elemental analysis, and thermal analysis. The compound crystallizes in the triclinic space group P 1 ‾ $P\overline{1}$ with one Bi 3+ cation and one TBTC 3− trianion in the asymmetric unit. Edge-sharing of BiO 7 polyhedra leads to the formation of dinuclear Bi 2 O 12 units, which through coordination to six TBTC 3− ions form a layered two-periodic structure. Upon heating the material in air, the unit cell volume contracts by 9%, which is attributed to a shift in the inter-layer arrangement and to the flexibility of the building units of the structure. The compound starts to decompose at ∼300 °C. Topological analysis revealed layers consisting of 3-c and 6-c nodes, consistent with the two-periodic kgd net – the dual of the Kagome net ( kgm ). However, due to the non-planar nature of the Bi(TBTC) layers, adjacent layers are interlaced by polycatenation.

Abstract

A metathesis reaction employing Ag[C(CN) 3 ] and TlBr yielded the expected target compound Tl[C(CN) 3 ] from aqueous solution, but after its structural and Raman-spectroscopic characterization, it became clear rather unexpectedly, that the title compound does not crystallize isotypically to any of the heavy alkali-metal tricyanomethanides. Tl[C(CN) 3 ] adopts the space group R 32 with the trigonal cell parameters a = 806.03(6) and c = 709.86(5) pm exhibiting a crystal structure still related to the one of the also trigonally crystallizing compounds A [C(CN) 3 ] ( A = Rb and Cs; space group: R 3 ‾ c $R\overline{3}c$ ) with doubled c -axes, which display distorted octahedrally coordinated A + cations. In Tl[C(CN) 3 ], the Tl + cations show a trigonal-prismatic coordination sphere with the terminal nitrogen atoms of six tricyanomethanide anions. There is also a long-distance capping of the triangular faces by two tricyanomethanide anions with their central carbon atoms at longer distance ( d (Tl–N) = 299 pm; d (Tl⋯C) = 355 pm). Due to these bonding patterns, the tricyanomethanide unit in Tl[C(CN) 3 ] is found to have the smallest volume increment of all [C(CN) 3 ] – anions reported so far. A synopsis of the crystal structures and Raman spectra of all reported tricyanomethanides A [C(CN) 3 ] with monocations ( A = Li–Cs, Cu, Ag and Tl) is given. According to quantum-chemical calculations, the central carbon atom within the Y-aromatic π-electron system of the [C(CN) 3 ] – anion and the lone pair at the Tl + cation are assembled to a one-dimensional string along [001] via Kramers-Anderson super-exchange with equidistant atoms ( d (Tl⋯C) = 355 pm), which might be addressed as an undistorted Peierls chain.

Abstract

Hydrothermal synthesis, crystal structure and properties of a new heterometallic coordination polymer [(VO(terpy)) 4 (MoO 4 ) 2 (Mo 8 O 26 )]·2H 2 O ( 1 ) (terpy = 2,2′;6′,2″-terpyridine) are reported. Compound 1 contains two crystallographically unique vanadium(IV) atoms, bonded to a terminal oxido ligand and further coordinated to a terpy ligand. The three N atoms of terpy occupy the meridional sites of a distorted {VN 3 O 3 } octahedron. A γ-octamolybdate (Mo 8 O 26 ) 4– located on an inversion centre and a tetraoxidomolybdate (MoO 4 ) 2– function as bridging ligands. The μ 3 -bridging tridentate binding of (MoO 4 ) 2– leads to the formation of a {V 4 Mo 2 O 12 } 4+ cationic unit consisting of an eight-membered heterometallic {Mo 2 V 2 O 4 } ring with protruding oxidovanadium handles. A pair of {V 4 Mo 2 O 12 } 4+ units are bridged by the centrosymmetric (Mo 8 O 26 ) 4– ligand, resulting in the formation of an infinite chain of alternating {V 4 Mo 2 O 12 } 4+ cations and (Mo 8 O 26 ) 4– anions.

Abstract

Single crystals of Dy 11 Ge 4.33 In 5.67 were grown from a sample of the starting composition Dy 55 Ge 20 In 25 by arc-melting and subsequent annealing. Dy 11 Ge 4.33 In 5.67 crystallizes with the Sm 11 Ge 4 In 6 -type structure, space group I 4/ mmm, which was refined from single-crystal X-ray diffractometer data: a = 11.4329(16), c = 16.168(3) Å, w R 2 = 0.0341, 927 F 2 values and 42 refined parameters. The isotypic compound Tm 11 Ge 4 In 6 was characterized by X-ray powder diffraction: a = 11.262(2), c = 15.979(3) Å, R Bragg = 3.53%. The Sm 11 Ge 4 In 6 -type structure is a coloring variant of the Ho 11 Ge 10 type, realized through germanium-indium ordering. The p -element substructure has four crystallographically independent sites: isolated germanium atoms (Ge 4− Zintl anions), In 4 squares and In/Ge–In/Ge dumb-bells with pronounced Ge/In mixing.

Abstract

SrHPO 4 is used in a multitude of applications, including biomedicine, catalysts, luminescent materials, and batteries. However, the performance of these materials depends on the ability to control the formation and transformation of strontium phosphates. This work focuses on the application of in situ and ex situ measurements, including synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, luminescence of Ce 3+ and Eu 3+ dopants, light transmission, reflectance, and thermogravimetry to track structural changes in SrHPO 4 under different experimental conditions. Ex situ analysis of aliquots revealed favourable crystallisation of β -SrHPO 4 through the formation of Sr 6 H 3 (PO 4 ) 5 ·2H 2 O as an intermediate. Furthermore, in situ analysis showed that the reaction mechanism evolves via the initial formation of amorphous strontium phosphate and Sr 5 (PO 4 ) 3 OH, which subsequently transforms to γ -SrHPO 4 . Analysis of the luminescence properties of the lanthanide dopants provided insights into the coordination environments of the substituted Sr 2+ sites.

Oxygen evolving reactions catalyzed by different manganese oxides: the role of oxidation state and specific surface area

Abstract

A set of the four manganese oxide powders α-MnO 2 (hollandite), δ-MnO 2 (birnessite), Mn 2 O 3 (bixbyite), and Mn 3 O 4 (hausmannite) have been synthesized in a phase-pure form and tested as catalysts in three different oxygen evolution reactions (OER): electrochemical OER in KOH (1 mol L −1 ), chemical OER using aqueous cerium ammonium nitrate, and H 2 O 2 decomposition. The trends in electrochemical (hollandite >> bixbyite > birnessite > hausmannite) and chemical OER (hollandite > birnessite > bixbyite > hausmannite) are different, which can be explained by differences in electric conductivity. H 2 O 2 decomposition and chemical OER, on the other hand, showed the same trend and even a linear correlation of their initial OER rates. A linear correlation between the catalytic performance and the manganese oxidation state of the catalysts was observed. Another trend was observed related to the specific surface area, highlighting the importance of these properties for the OER. Altogether, hollandite was found to be the best performing catalyst in this study due to a combination of the high manganese oxidation state and a large specific surface area. Likely, due to a sufficient electrical conductivity, this intrinsically high OER performance is also found to some extent in electrocatalysis for this specific example.

Abstract

The reaction of Na 2 MoO 4 ·2H 2 O with 2-amino-2-(hydroxymethyl)propane-1,3-diol (LH) in water at room temperature results in the formation of the heterometallic coordination polymer [Mo 2 O 6 L 2 (Na 2 (H 2 O) 4 )]·2H 2 O 1 (L = 2-amino-3-hydroxy-2-(hydroxymethyl)propan-1-olato). The structure of 1 consists of a neutral (Mo 2 O 6 ) unit located on an inversion center. The Mo atoms exhibit hexa-coordination and are bonded to two terminal and two bridging oxido ligands, an alkoxide oxygen and the amine N atoms of an anionic ligand L – resulting in the formation of an edge-sharing {Mo 2 O 8 N 2 } bioctahedron. The Na + cations of a centrosymmetric bis(μ 2 -aqua)-bridged (Na 2 (H 2 O) 4 ) 2+ unit are penta-coordinated and bonded to two symmetry related L – ligands via the oxygen atoms of their OH groups. The µ 3 -bridging tetradentate binding mode of L – results in the formation of a two-dimensional heterometallic coordination polymer. The constituents of 1 viz. (Mo 2 O 6 ), (L) – , (Na 2 (H 2 O) 4 ) 2+ and lattice water molecules are interlinked with the aid of three varieties of hydrogen bonding interactions. The corresponding tungstate reported recently has been obtained through a similar synthetic protocol and is isostructural.

Abstract

The new Fe(II) complex [Fe(trident)(bmik)](ClO 4 ) 2 ( 1 ) (trident = bis(2-pyridylmethyl)benzylamine and bmik = bis(1-methylimidazole)ketone) exhibits a change of magnetic moment in dichloromethane (DCM) solution upon addition of pyridine which is attributed to the Coordination-Induced Spin State Switching effect (CISSS). By attaching a photoisomerizable azopyridine sidegroup to the tridentate ligand the complex [Fe(azpy-trident)(bmik)](ClO 4 ) 2 ( 2 ; azpy-trident = [ N,N -bis(2-pyridylmethyl)]-3-(3-pyridylazo)benzylamine) is obtained. As detected by Evans NMR spectroscopy, 2 reversibly changes its magnetic moment in homogeneous solution upon photoirradiation which is attributed to intermolecular Light-Driven Coordination-Induced Spin State Switching (LD-CISSS). Further support for this interpretation is inferred from concentration-dependent Evans NMR measurements.

Abstract

The presence of Laue oscillations in a film grown on a solid surface is broadly taken as indicating a high quality, crystallographically aligned film of the targeted compound. In this paper we briefly review the origins of both Laue oscillations and Kiessig fringes and show how they can be used together to determine if extra thickness exists above or below the coherently diffracting domains. The differences between experimental and “ideal” films are discussed and the effect of structural features (roughness, different thickness coherently diffracting domains and thickness in addition to the coherently diffracting domains) are illustrated with experimental and simulated data for metal and mixed-metal chalcogenide films of titanium, bismuth, vanadium/iron, and bismuth/molybdenum. Examples are given showing how quantitative information can be extracted from experimental diffraction patterns.

Gadolinium trisilicide − a paramagnetic representative of the YbSi₃ type series

Abstract

Binary gadolinium trisilicide GdSi 3 was prepared by high-pressure high-temperature synthesis at typically 9.5(5) GPa and 870 K before quenching to ambient conditions. At ambient pressure, GdSi 3 exhibits an exothermic decomposition at 647(10) K into the thermodynamically stable phases GdSi 2– x and Si, indicating its metastable character. Powder X-ray diffraction data is consistent with the YbSi 3 -type crystal structure comprising slabs of condensed Si 2 dumbbells, which enclose layered arrangements of gadolinium cations. Quantum chemical analysis of the chemical bonding shows, that the framework is formed by silicon dumbbells with homopolar bonds. The magnetic moment of 8.13(8) µ B is consistent with Gd4 f 7 (Gd 3+ state) and antiferromagnetic ordering is observed below 64(1) K.
