Lecture - De Gruyter Book Archiv
Thursday| Oct 11 | 4:30-5:30pm | De Gruyter | Stage: Academic & Business Information Stage (Hall 4.2 / N101)
“Digitizing De Gruyter Book Archive – Why collaborations matter for small and medium sized publishers”
A large-scale collaborative digitization project at De Gruyter. Meet the makers.
In 2016, the Berlin-based academic publisher De Gruyter has taken the decision to digitize the entirety of its backlist all the way back to 1749. The final archive will contain almost 50,000 titles and will be available as ebooks and hardcover PODs. However, De Gruyter’s desire to preserve its publishing heritage can only be achieved by cooperating closely with partners. Only together with its library and service partners, De Gruyter can secure the completeness and high-quality of the primary sources they are offering to researchers. Meet the digitization team and its partners and learn why cooperation is key to make almost 270 years of publishing history available for generations to come.
Speakers: Steve Fallon (Sales Director, Americas), Saskia Wenzel (Senior Manager Publisher Partnerships) and Eric Merkel-Sobotta (Vice President Communications & External Affairs)

Lecture - From idea to publication – quality content made by De Gruyter
Saturday | Oct 13 | 11:00-11:30am | De Gruyter | Stage: Academic & Business Information Stage (Halle 4.2 / N101)
„From idea to publication – quality content made by De Gruyter”
Why it needs publishers more than ever and how De Gruyter ensures the quality of publications.
The publishing world is experiencing exciting times: new forms of publications such as open access as well as the ongoing digitization raise the question of whether publishers will be needed in the future. We say: more than ever! In order to ensure quality standards in the course of the publication process and continue to publish high-quality content/products, it requires a driving, coordinating force. Especially since a large number of writings would not have seen the light of day without the initiative of publishers. We at De Gruyter want to explain to you, based on the people and roles in our publishing house, why we believe that publishers are by no means an endangered species and how we face today's and tomorrow's challenges.
Speakers: Marc Erdorf (Manager HR), Daniel Tiemann (Editorial Director Medicine and Life Sciences)
