Transforming our journals into open access
At De Gruyter, we firmly believe that open access and open research are the future of academic journal publishing. With this in mind, we have set the goal to transitioning most of our subscription journals to Open Access by 2028, working closely and collaboratively with editors, societies, funders, and institutions worldwide.
The journey so far
In 2013 we launched our first open access journal. Since then, we have expanded our gold open access journal portfolio and increased open access publishing options:
- across our hybrid journals
- through the conclusion of institutional open access agreements worldwide
- Through the launch of new fully open access titles
- by introducing Subscribe to Open (S2O) as alternative transformative model
Our transformation strategy
As a publisher with a strong focus on the humanities and social sciences, designing the transition to open access in a way that it works for all subject areas and supports our global author community regardless of their financial means is of key importance to us.
This is why we have decided to employ Subscribe to Open (S2O) as the main model to facilitate the sustainable open access transformation. At the same time, we will continue to grow our fully open access journal portfolio.
As a publisher that has been engaged in Open Access for many years, we are convinced that these steps will allow us to fulfil our mission to make knowledge accessible.
Open access journals: Where we are now
In 2022, 36% of De Gruyter’s total article output was published open access. This corresponds to a total of 6,300 open access articles. Between 2022 and 2023, we have expanded our Subscribe to Open program to a total of 16 titles. We also added 8 new titles to our fully gold open access portfolio which now includes 100+ titles.
A strong open access book program
De Gruyter is one of the world’s largest independent open access book publishers in the world. Since 2010, our open access books program has grown continuously, with 220 of our new publications published immediately open access in 2022.
We are committed to working in collaboration with academia, libraries, and research funders to make open access book publishing possible for all our authors in the future. With this vision in mind, we have developed new transformation and funding models for open access books.
