Open Access Articles

Academic publishing is undergoing a fundamental shift towards open research, driven by the growing demand from research communities to eliminate access barriers. De Gruyter is responding to this call by providing open access publishing options throughout its entire journal portfolio. We are dedicated to supporting the transition to a fully open access publishing system for our journals.

APC Journals
close

APC journals are entirely open access, exclusively publishing content that is freely accessible and can be re-used. The final version of your article (version of record) is immediately available to all readers.

Are there charges for open access publishing in APC journals?

We apply an article processing charge (APC) to cover the costs of publishing. The APC amount varies by journal and can be found on the journal’s website and our journal pricing list.

If the corresponding author is affiliated with an institution having an agreement with De Gruyter, the article processing charge may be entirely covered or discounted.

Corresponding authors from countries classified as low-income or lower middle-income economies are eligible for a full waiver or a discount.

Requests for individual waivers are assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Which licenses and copyright policies apply?

Authors retain copyright. Most of our APC journals apply a CC BY 4.0 license.

Where can I find more information?

Please see our article processing charges policies for more information.
Please see our institutional open access agreements page for more information on eligibility.

Subscribe to Open (S2O) Journals
close

A subscription-based journal is converted to open access on a yearly basis due to the ongoing support of the subscribers.

Do charges apply for open access publishing in S2O journals?

All authors are entitled to publish open access without cost.

Which licenses and copyright policies apply?

If the S2O transition to OA is successful, authors retain copyright and articles are published under a Creative Commons License. Our S2O journals operate under either a CC BY 4.0 or CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 license. Please refer to the journal’s website for specific details.

If the S2O transition to OA is not successful, our green open policy for Subscribe to Open titles is applicable. That means that authors can deposit the author accepted manuscript at any time under a CC BY license. If the S2O transition is unsuccessful, authors also have the option to choose to publish hybrid open access.

Please visit our Subscribe to Open website for more detailed information on the model and the journals participating in our Subscribe to Open program.

Sponsored Journals
close

Sponsored journals, sometimes also referred to as diamond journals, are entirely open access, exclusively publishing content that is freely accessible and can be re-used. The final version of your article (version of record) is immediately available to all readers.

Do charges apply for open access publishing in sponsored journals?

There are no costs for authors as a sponsoring institution is funding the open access publication of the entire journal.

Which licenses and copyright policies apply?
Author retain copyright. Our sponsored journals operate under a CC BY 4.0 or CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 license.

Hybrid Journals
close

Hybrid journals are subscription-based, with individual articles published in gold open access, while the majority of content remains accessible only to subscribers.

Two routes to publishing open access for hybrid journals:

  • You have the option to publish your article as hybrid gold open access, making it immediately available to all readers.
  • If you choose to publish your article in closed access, you can opt for open access through the green route: You may self-archive the version of record in an institutional repository or on your personal website after a 12-month embargo period.

Do charges apply for open access publishing in hybrid journals?

If you choose to publish in hybrid gold open access, an article processing charge of 2,000 EUR (plus VAT if applicable) applies. Corresponding authors from institutions with which we have an institutional open access agreement can publish hybrid gold open access without incurring any fee.

There are no costs associated with opting for the green route.

Which licenses and copyright policies apply?

If you opt for hybrid gold open access, you, as the author, retain copyright. We apply a CC BY 4.0 license to hybrid gold open access articles.

However, if you choose to publish your article in closed access, the publisher holds the copyright, and rights and re-use are limited.

Where can I find more information?

Please consult our institutional open access agreements for detailed information on whether you are eligible to publish in hybrid gold open access at no cost.

Additionally, refer to our repository policy for more details regarding the green route.

Read only Journals
close

Our few read only journals are subscription-based and do not allow for gold open access publishing. Consequently, all content published in read only journals is available only to subscribers. Nevertheless, our green open access policy extends to read-only journals, allowing authors to self-archive the version of record in an institutional repository or on their personal website after a 12-month embargo period.

Do charges apply for open access publishing in read-only journals?

The green route is cost-free.

Which licenses and copyright policies apply?

You transfer the copyright to your articles to De Gruyter. Rights and re-use are restricted.

Where can I find more information?

Please refer to our repository policy for more details regarding the green route.
