Medieval Studies
At the heart of De Gruyter lies our German Medieval Studies program – after all, Walter de Gruyter was a medievalist who started his publishing business with editions of medieval texts. From these modest beginnings, we have grown into one of the most prestigious programs in the German-speaking academic community. Our portfolio covers all disciplines studying the Middle Ages, and consists not only of collections and monographs, but also handbooks, critical editions, student editions, atlases, and databases.
In the past few years, we have expanded our program even further: in addition to volumes focusing on the literature and language of the German Middle Ages, we are publishing an increasing number of books on medieval history, research from other philologies, as well as interdisciplinary studies. With German and English as languages of publication and with a growing number of Open Access publications, our program is particularly attractive for international scholars.
