Abstract

Referring to the principles of ancient rhetoric, as Blumenberg puts them, human life could be grasped, if at all, only in rhetorical categories, human acting should be shaped linguistically in every respect, and truth must remain quite inaccessible. Every reflection on speech appears in anthropologic terms, as a human disposal of linguistic life. This paper analyzes Blumenberg’s phenomenologic access to the effects of rhetoric without losing sight of the historical perspective. Thus, it tries to bring out how rhetoric operates between the single relevant components: between speech and object within the framework of intersubjective communication and between object and subject in the area of a pragmatics which is determined by its sourroundings (»Lebenswelt«).
