Introduction Long-term investigations assessing the diversity of the benthic marine macroalgae of the state of Quintana Roo, Caribbean Mexico, have resulted in the collection of two undescribed red algae characterized by a central medulla formed by two large axial filaments, septate rhizoidal filaments and with all reproductive structures developing within sori typical of Ochtodes in the Rhizophyllidaceae ( Wiseman 1976 , 1977 ). The Rhizophyllidaceae consists of five genera and at least 17 species from temperate through tropical waters ( Guiry and Guiry 2015

identified five species of Polysiphonia sensu lato from 16 Florida and Caribbean Mexico samples. Morphological character states were exam- ined and used to identify these species as Neosiphonia baja- cali comb. nov., N. echinata comb. nov., N. sphaerocarpa, N. tepida, and Polysiphonia anomala. Descriptions are pro- vided and the phylogenetic relationships of the five species were determined through maximum likelihood analyses of rbcL and nuclear-encoded SSU sequence data.
