pitfalls are to be avoided and the accuracy of potassium measurements enhanced. Magnesium; the least appreciated electrolyte Magnesium is the fourth most abundant cation (after calcium, potassium and sodium) and the second most abundant intracellular cation after potassium, but the physiological and pathological roles of magnesium are the least appreciated. Furthermore, the most common method of assessing magnesium status, namely plasma/serum measurement can be flawed and misleading ( see ref. [13] for more details). Errors in assessing magnesium status falls under two

1 Introduction The ternary systems rare earth metal ( RE )-electron-rich transition metal ( T )-magnesium exhibit a large number of RE x T y Mg z intermetallic compounds with a manifold of different structure types [ 1 ]. So far more than 200 ternary compounds have been reported [ 2 ]. Several of these compounds have simple compositions and crystallize with structure types that also occur for indides or stannides: RET 4 Mg, RET Mg, RE 4 T Mg, RET Mg 2 , and RE 2 T 2 Mg. Typical pairs of compounds [ 2 ] for these different compositions are NdNi 4 In and
