It is shown by X-ray structure determination of its acetyl derivative, that the vic. triketone 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-3,4,5-trione reported in the literature really is 2-(1-hydroxy-1-methylethyl)-5,5-dimethyl-4,5-dihydropyrrol-3,4-dione. The UV-PE-spectra of both compounds and their electronic structures are interpreted by means of MO calculations. A mechanism yielding these pyrroline-1 derivatives instead of piperidine ketones is suggested, the formerly assigned structures of precursors are corrected.
