structural long-range order. We start the following discussion with a short overview on valence-precise binary beryllium compounds and a survey of beryllium-containing Zintl phases and finally focus on binary and multinary beryllium intermetallics. The basic crystallographic data of all these phases are compiled in the Pearson database [ 10 ]. In addition to the crystal chemical data, in the following subchapters we also briefly review the physical properties of the respective beryllium intermetallics, where applicable. Introduction Zintl phases gained some interest as reversible hydrogen storage materials since they react under mild conditions, e.g. CaSiH 1.3 [ 1 ], [ 2 ], KSiH 3 [ 3 ], [ 4 ] or SrAl 2 H 2 [ 5 ], [ 6 ]. 1 Introduction The alkaline earth metals form a large variety of binary electron-precise Zintl phases with the tetrel elements [ 1 ], [ 2 ], [ 3 ]. The typical textbook examples are Ca 2 Si, CaSi and CaSi 2 with isolated Si 4− ions, Si 2− zig-zag chains and Si − arsenic-related puckered hexagons, respectively.
