Anemia is one of the most common disorders around the globe, affecting approximately 1.62 billion people, thus corresponding to ~25% of the worldwide population [ 1 ]. Among the various causes of anemia, iron deficiency is present in approximately half of all cases. The diagnosis of iron deficiency anemia requires laboratory-confirmed anemia combined with the evidence of low iron stores. Since iron stores in the body primarily exist in form of ferritin, recent guidelines and indications suggest that the measurement of serum ferritin should be regarded as the most

. Perinatal iron status was measured by cord-blood serum ferritin concentration, which has been recognized as an effective biomarker of fetal iron status [28]. Stress early in pregnancy was defined as being in the first trimester of pregnancy and living in southern Israel during a military operation (“Oferet-Yetzuka”, December 27, 2008–January 18, 2009), when there were more than 600 rocket attacks in the area. In addition, maternal retrospective subjective stress was evaluated to measure perceived psychological stress. Our hypothesis was that stress during the first

Introduction Ferritin is a major intracellular iron storage protein composed of tissue-specific heteropolymers of heavy and light chains (H- and L-ferritin) [ 1 ]. In addition, ferritin is found in serum, reflecting hepatic iron stores or acute phase reactivity. Numerous clinical conditions are associated with increased serum ferritin levels, e.g. hereditary haemochromatosis (HH), hyperproliferative or ineffective erythropoiesis, as well as liver and inflammatory diseases [ 2 ], [ 3 ]. Hereditary hyperferritinaemia-cataract syndrome (HHCS) was first described in
