350 million people are at risk of IDDs [ 5 ]. Out of 587 districts in India, 282 have been surveyed for IDDs and 241 have been found to be experiencing a goiter endemic [ 6 ]. IDDs are thus not restricted to the classical hilly sub-Himalayan goiter endemic belt of India. It has also been reported from the plains, (especially areas that are subject to annual flooding), riverine areas, deltas and even in coastal regions [ 7 ]. The Kolkata district covers an area of 185 km 2 . As per the 2011 Census it had a population of 4,496,694 [ 8 ]. As regards the post salt

collected from the selected study areas. Results: The prevalence of goiter was 26.3% (grade 1: 23.2%; grade 2: 3.1%). Median urinary iodine level was 6.0 μ^αΐ, and 42% had concentration <5 μςΛΗ. Mean (SD) urinary SCN was 0.75 (0.4) mg/dl. Onlyl7.1% of salt samples had iodine level >15 ppm; 82.9% had <15 ppm. Conclusion: Consumption of inadequately iodized salt and cyanogenic plant foods containing goitrogenic/anti-thyroidal substances by the people of the studied region are possible reasons for the persistence of goiter during the post salt iodination phase. impacts of excess iodine intake in this era of post salt iodization phase especially in iodine-replete regions are currently being investigated worldwide, yielding reports of impairment of thyroid functions, carcinogenesis, reproductive malfunctions, to mention some [17] . TH impairment is closely linked with the metabolic processes as TH regulates cholesterol and carbohydrate metabolism through direct actions on gene expression as well as cross-talk with other nuclear receptors [18] ; however, the impacts on those metabolic aspects remain unexplored under the effects

people are credulous. When Washington (and Moscow) cease to believe that the CIA is a source of objective intelligence taken seriously by policymakers and negotiators, arms-control proposals naturally meet with an uncooperative re- sponse. Thus, Kissinger achieved his historic accord with the Russians at the expense of the CIA's standing and potential utility on future occasions. Because of this, the post-SALT deterioration in White House-CIA relations, instead of damaging the CIA's standing still further, served notice of the start of an Agency revival. Richard Helms

understood what SALT meant for the other, and the regime's weak international institutions did little to correct for this. Instead, decisionmakers proceeded as if U.S. and Soviet ideas about nuclear weapons and deterrence were the same in their essen tials or at the very least compatible. Although this permitted the superpowers to achieve a kind of cooper ation in the short run, it was damaging to the prospects for cooperation over the longer term. Several elements of immediate post-SALT history stand out. In the wake of the May Summit, the United States
