This volume continues the authoritative edition of the Acta conciliorum oecumenicorum (ACO) for the ecumenical councils of the first millennium and contains the edition of the proceedings of the VII Ecumenical Council of 787 (Nicaenum II) which dealt with the controversy surrounding the veneration of images. The first part contains a detailed introduction dealing with the transmission of the proceedings and then presents the Greek text of the first three sessions, confronting these with the Latin translation (873) of the Anastasius Bibliothecarius. The detailed critical apparatus also references source texts and critical texts.
The second volume of the three-volume edition (the first volume was published in 2008) continues the edition of the proceedings of the Seventh Ecumenical Council of 787 (Nicaenum II) which dealt with the controversy surrounding the veneration of images (Iconoclastic Controversy). In addition to an introduction which describes the transmission of the proceedings, it contains the Greek text of the 3rd and 4th sessions of the council, confronting these with the Latin translation ofAnastasius Bibliothecarius in 873. The detailed critical apparatus also references source texts and parallel texts.
The 3rd volume of the series on the 7th Ecumenical Council of 787, devoted to the issue of the veneration of icons, completes the authoritative series on the ecumenical councils, the Acta conciliorum oecumenicorum. Critically edited for the first time, the texts of the ACO form the basis for theological, historical, and philological research on late antiquity and the Middle Ages. They are an essential component of every research library.
