Volume 1 in this series
This book provides an overview of approaches to language and culture and outlines the broad interdisciplinary field of anthropological linguistics and linguistic anthropology. It identifies fields and directions of research, including the ethnography of communication, cultural conceptualizations, linguistic avoidance, language acquisition and socialization practices, culture and language contact, language identity and ideology, and finally new scholarly trends. Furthermore, it provides areal perspectives on the study of language in cultural contexts (namely Africa, the Americas, Australia and Oceania, Asia, and Europe) and lays the foundation for future developments and innovations within the field. In this way, it bridges the disciplines and paves the way for the book series Anthropological Linguistics.
