The Deutsches Theater-Lexikon [Dictionary of German Theatre] provides a host of information on every aspect of the stage. It comprises meticulously researched contributions on actors, singers, directors, playwrights and theatre managers etc. In addition, it defines significant key words and organizational structures, and portraits outstanding playhouses and venues. The dictionary lists date and place of first nights of plays, operas and operettas; biographical dates of artists; as well as chronological listings of the performers' engagements. Each entry contains a bibliography of relevant secondary literature.

Das Register der Namen und Begriffe ist in fünf Kapitel aufgeteilt: Personennamen, Dramen, Orte, literarische und historische Gestalten sowie Begriffe rund um das Theater. Während letztere Kapitel nur in den Bänden des Hauptwerkes vorkommen, deshalb v.a. eine bequeme Übersicht der vergebenen Stichworte ergeben, bietet das Register der Personen dem Benutzer einen weitaus größeren Mehrwert: Es wird ersichtlich, ob die gesuchte Person im "Grundwerk" oder in den Nachtragsbänden oder in beiden vorkommt. Darüberhinaus wurden zusätzlich Personen an einer einzigen Fundstelle zusammengeführt, auch wenn sie unter unterschiedlichen Namen im Lexikon vorkommen. Wo notwendig, wurden Verweise eingefügt.
