Die Reihe Mythological Studies (MythoS) ist der Erschließung von Mythen in verschiedenen medialen Konkretionen aus disziplinärer wie fächerübergreifender, transmedialer und komparativer Perspektive gewidmet. Einen geographischen und zeitlichen Ausgangspunkt bilden Mythen aus dem Bereich der antiken Mittelmeerkulturen und des Alten Orients, doch sind Ausweitungen bis in die Moderne projektiert. Einen inhaltlichen Schwerpunkt stellt eine vornehmlich stoffanalytische Herangehensweise dar, nach der Mythos nicht als Text oder Gattung, sondern als Erzählstoff verstanden wird, der sich in verschiedenen Formen medial konkretisieren läßt wie in Texten oder Bildern, aber bspw. auch in Form von rituellen Handlungen, Tänzen, Pantomimen, mündlichen Vorträgen oder Filmen.

In die Reihe werden wissenschaftliche Editionen und Arbeiten zu Mythen aus verschiedenen Epochen und Kulturen aufgenommen sowie Studien zu Theorie und Methodik der Mythosforschung. Veröffentlichungssprachen sind Englisch und Deutsch. Manuskripte werden von zwei Gutachter*innen beurteilt. Dabei gilt das Single-blind peer review-Verfahren.

In ancient myths, the sky is a numinous space. What comes from it is of outstanding importance. This transdisciplinary volume by the Collegium Mythologicum explores myths that involve transfers from the sky. The volume utilizes the hylistics established by Christian Zgoll to combine and compare its findings. Ultimately, transfers from the sky prove to be indicators of numinosity in mythical garb.

Creation is a central theme in Mesopotamian texts. In which contexts were creation texts employed? Using clearly situated sources, the author develops a methodological process for answering this question. Ten famous creation texts are examined in terms of their performance and meaning in Mesopotamian religious practice, thus providing insights into the ritual use of myth.

Journey to the realm of the dead, transfer to the Island of the Blessed, ascension to heaven - with innovative theoretical and methodological approaches, myths about the change of spheres can be reconstructed as narrative materials with different variants and strata. The new approaches pursued here open up dynamic processes of myth transmission and surprise with the proof of different strata, which reveal an intertwining of several levels of meaning.

The volume is a programmatic manifesto for the new series MythoS. The author develops new methods – the hyleme analysis and the stratification analysis – and applies them on mythological materials, reconstructing myths as “Stoffe” and making them understandable in their polymorphic nature. In this groundbreaking work, the author sets the stage for a general theory of myth based on a new comprehensive, transmedial and comparative Stoff-research.
