Die SCHRIFTEN DER THEODOR FONTANE GESELLSCHAFT stellen ein Forum zur Veröffentlichung herausragender Forschungsleistungen dar, die vom Umfang her eine gesonderte Publikation erfordern und geeignet sind, Leben und Werk Fontanes einer größeren literarischen Öffentlichkeit nahezubringen (Tagungsbände und Monographien). Besondere Aufmerksamkeit gilt dabei der Edition von Werkkomplexen, die in die Gesamtausgaben noch nicht eingegangen sind und zu ihrer angemessenen Erschließung einer monographischen Behandlung bedürfen (Briefwechsel bzw. Briefe an einzelne Personen oder Personengruppen, auch in Verbindung mit beruflichen Aufgaben und Tätigkeitsbereichen, journalistische Arbeiten für bestimmte Zeitungen, Übersetzungen etc.). Mit der Herausgabe dieser Schriftenreihe möchte die Theodor Fontane Gesellschaft das öffentliche Gespräch über Fontane und seine Zeit, über seine Werke und die mancher seiner Zeitgenossen anregen und fördern und damit über das Interesse an Fontane hinaus der Beschäftigung mit Geschichte und Kultur des 19. Jahrhunderts neue Impulse geben.

This study addresses the textual modeling of the Polish culture in the works of Theodor Fontane, examining diachronic shifts as well as thematic and narrative constants. Against the backdrop of Poland’s conflicted connection with Prussian history, the author shows that across genres, Poland was made into a major political-aesthetic phenomenon in Fontane’s texts, a subject suspended between attraction and repulsion.

The study investigates the influence of the two visual media photography and painting on the works of Theodor Fontane. Firstly, the author analyzes images that can be properly acknowledged only with reference to the historical context. Secondly, she considers the changes in visual perception prompted by the new visual media that arose in the 19th century. The author establishes that Fontane saw and described things in ways analogous to pictures and shows how his consideration of perceptual ability is reflected in the differentiated portrayal of the ways his characters have of seeing things.

Gottfried Keller and Theodor Fontane are among the most important authors in Realism. A comparative reading of the two narrative writers reveals a multi-facetted interplay of similarities and differences. The correspondence between Fontane and Lepel is the main source for our knowledge of the young Fontane. It contains some 410 letters written between 1844 and 1884, which give insights into social, literary and political life in Berlin. The letters have been critically edited here for the first time from the mss., and are complemented by literary and journalistic writings by the two friends. The comprehensive commentary consists of notes and explanatory indexes. The commentaries on individual passages make use of both the research literature and unpublished archive material. The afterword provides an evaluation of the significance of the correspondence.

Zu den bedeutendsten Briefen Theodor Fontanes (1819-1898) zählen die Briefe an die Tochter Martha (1860-1917). Die neu kommentierte kritische Briefedition versammelt erstmals alle nachgewiesenen 180 Briefe Theodor Fontanes an seine Tochter Martha und macht die 90 vergriffenen Briefe der Tochter an die Eltern wieder zugänglich. Der chronologisch geordnete Briefwechsel, dem auch Briefe beigefügt sind, die die Tochter nach dem Tod ihres Vaters schrieb, enthält zahlreiche unbekannte Dokumente, u. a. die vollständigen Nachschriften von Emilie Fontane in den Briefen ihres Mannes an die Tochter, 60 zumeist unveröffentlichte Briefe aus dem familiären Umfeld (zu dem auch Künstlerfreunde gehören), Briefentwürfe des Autors und etwa 30 unbekannte Abbildungen. Der mit den entsprechenden Registern versehene Band wird ergänzt durch ein Nachwort der Herausgeberin.

Zum ersten Mal wird der Briefwechsel Fontanes mit dem Kunsthistoriker und Herausgeber des "Deutschen Kunstblattes" Friedrich Eggers veröffentlicht. Er führt den Leser in das bewegte literarische Leben in Berlin Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts und gibt eine Fülle neuer Aufschlüsse über die Welt Fontanes, über die Personen, mit denen er zu tun hatte, und rückt mit Friedrich Eggers einen Mann ins Blickfeld, der bislang kaum Beachtung gefunden hat.

Eggers, der das literarischer Vereinsleben prägte, spielte in den fünfziger Jahren für Fontanes literarischen und beruflichen Werdegang eine wichtige Rolle. Fontane hat Eggers zeitlebens skeptisch gegenüber gestanden, aber gleichzeitig von seiner Hilfs- und Aufopferungsbereitschaft profitiert

Für die Kommentierung konnte der umfangreiche Nachlaß von Friedrich Eggers erstmalig intensiv genutzt werden, so daß die Edition Informationen bietet, die weit über die Beziehung der beiden Briefschreiber hinausweisen.

From 1860 to 1870, Fontane worked on the Neue Preußische Zeitung, the so-called "Kreuzzeitung" in Berlin. His "false" correspondents' reports, of which he wrote a great number for the conservative newspaper, reflect contemporary political and social events. He took most of his material from duplicated reports from German agencies and from German and foreign newspapers, which he read in Berlin and then synthesised as though he were actually on the spot. Most of his reports dealt with Great Britain, with some from other European countries.

For a long time, research has ignored Fontane's ten years on the Kreuzzeitung. The reasons lie partly in the difficulty of accessing source, but also in Fontane's own attempts to play down this period of his life from his more liberal position in his later years. His contributions to the Kreuzzeitung show him however to have been a convinced conservative at that time, and demonstrate how closely he identified with Bismarck's thinking and policies. Thus these reports sharpen the previously diffuse image of Fontane's conservatism.

This edition of the "false" correspondents' reports, with its wealth of illustrative material, lends a new dimension to the image of Fontane as a witness of his time.

Die Studie vergleicht Theodor Fontane und Adolph Menzel anhand der These der interferierenden Bildwelten: Die Romane wie die Gemälde zeigen eine Abkehr von einer ontologisch stabil geglaubten und zentralperspektivisch bzw. auktorial erfassbaren Realität zugunsten einer dynamisch verfassten und individuell gebrochenen Verfahrensrealität.

Passagen aus Irrungen, Wirrungen und Effi Briest und zwanzig Gemälde werden auf ihre Korrespondenzen im Hinblick auf die explizite Realisierung geschehensimmanenter Wahrnehmungs- und Vorstellungsprozesse untersucht. Mit der Figurenperspektive auf der literarischen Seite und der bildimmanente Betrachterperspektive auf der malerischen Seite rücken die inneren Bilder und imaginären Tiefenstrukturen der individuellen Wahrnehmungs- und Vorstellungsbezogenheit als ikonische Manifestation der dargestellten Wirklichkeit des Textes oder Gemäldes in den Fokus.

Die aufgezeigte phänomenologische Dimension der Wirklichkeit macht eine Vielzahl soziokultureller bzw. mentalitäts-, sozial- und kulturgeschichtlicher Implikationen offensichtlich. Damit verweist die Studie auf Fontanes und Menzels komplexen Verklärungsrealismus, sie erweitert und vertieft die bekannte Fontane-Menzel-Beziehung.
