The evolution of the electoral party system has also played a role in the
history of the Troubles. In the period immediately after partition and
creation of the Free State in 1921, the Northern Ireland electoralsystem
was based on a proportional representation (PR) system of single
transferable vote (STV). By the mid-1920s, PR led to the emergence of
political parties that threatened the ruling Ulster Unionist Party (UUP).
