The small town has traditionally enjoyed an inconspicuous existence away from the modern metropolis, both in terms of media portrayals and academic attention. However, the small-town experience is particularly emblematic of the contradictions underlying modernity. The essays in this volume consider this topic via the multifarious forms and functions of small-town imagination in literature.
