OUTER-PERFORMANCE RECEPTION (LEVEL II) Since the process of production is oriented towards the reception in the Lebanese case, it is expected to find out that this latter is also dependent on the spheres of discord in the environment. Those social dramas affect the reception in the first place before going further to the production. The outer-performance reception at Level II, can be divided into two processes: selecting a performance and going to theater. The attitude of the audiences towards theater determines the selection of a specific per- formance

of the Lebanese audiences, the theater performance is or is supposed to be a retlection of real life (2273, 2668). The mostprominent aspect ofthat resemblance is the reproduction of style elements of the environment in the performance. With those elements, the audience is able to construct a new »space« with its own rules, through which a new reality comes into view. The transition from »reality one« to »reality two« resembles the following description by Luckmann/Berger: Das Theater ist ein besonders gutes Beispiel des Spiels der Erwachsenen. Der Übergang

orientation that inevitably straddles different cultural codes, resulting in a composite cultural identity. The situation of being forced to get by in different languages and contradictory cultural codes is mirrored in the feature films and film essays of Ghassan Salhab from Lebanon. The narratives and aesthetics of his films are called forth by an atmosphere of political and psychological unease, of war, of fleeing. They can be read as seismographic recordings of a constant state of alertness and of the necessary recalibration of personal and social orientation
