Jan Lievens (1607–1674) was a 17th-century Dutch painter whose fame is due to his production of history pieces and portraits. Lievens took his inspiration from his teacher Pieter Lastman, his colleague Rembrandt van Rijn and from the Utrecht Caravaggisti. Lievens’ early biblical paintings are evocative of Lastman’s emphasis on gesture and facial expression which he used to convey psychological transformation.…
