Given the relative scarcity of very early Hebrew inscriptions, it is hard to judge how common abbreviations were in the earliest stages of the language, but the practice of abbreviating words in Hebrew, as in many of the other Semitic languages, probably developed soon after the creation of the alphabet, particularly in economic or other texts where some of the same items were mentioned repeatedly.…
