J. B. Lightfoot (1828–1889), one of the most important British biblical scholars of the 19th century, was born in Liverpool. Educated at Cambridge, he was elected Fellow of Trinity College in 1852 and became a Tutor in 1857. After being ordained a priest in 1858, he was appointed Hulsean Professor of Divinity in 1861 and later, in 1875, Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity.
