The epic tradition dominated early Greek literature with the Homeric Iliad and Odyssey. By the Hellenistic period, however, epic poetic works were considered old fashioned in many circles and even mocked. This was especially the case with Callimachus, the teacher of Apollonius of Rhodes. Apollonius’ work thus marked a revival of the epic tradition, even in opposition to his own teacher.…
