According to the NRSV, the name “Greece” appears in four passages in the HB/OT: Dan 8:21; 10:20; 11:2; and Zech 9:13 (so also ASV). In each case, “Greece” translates Hebrew Yāwān, which occurs elsewhere in Gen 10:2, 4; Isa 66:19; Ezek 27:13, 19; 1 Chr 1:5, 7 – all simply transliterated in the NRSV as Javan (from early Gk. Ἴωνες, the term for the Ionians; see “Javan”), though some of these passages have also been translated as “Greece” (so NIV in Isa 66:19; Ezek 27:13, 19; 1 Chr 1:5, 7;). By con…
