Jan van Leyden (1509–1536) was an important figure in the Anabaptist movement and temporarily led the so-called Anabaptist Kingdom of Münster (1534/35). The historical form which Anabaptist rule took on in Münster can only be understood in light of its biblical underpinnings, as the Bible served as the normative basis for political and social life under the Anabaptists.
