The modernist painter Emmanuel “Manny” Levy (1900–1986) was born to Russian-Jewish émigré parents in Manchester, and studied at the Art School under Adolphe Valette, holding his first solo exhibition in his native city, with which he remained closely associated, in 1925; Levy’s student drawing of a funeral procession (ca. 1919) was later acquired by Manchester Art Gallery.
