9. Integrated modeling of driver gaze and vehicle operation behavior during lane changes

Abstract

In this chapter, driver gaze and vehicle operation behavior during lane changes are modeled in order to detect risky lane changes.We first break down driver gaze and vehicle operation behavior into discrete actions, e. g., “looking into the right side-view mirror”, “braking”, “low lateral acceleration to the left”, etc., and then jointly model sequences of these discrete actions using multistream discrete hidden Markov models. In order to evaluate how effectively our integrated driver gaze and vehicle operation models represent lane change behavior, we conduct a risky lane change detection experiment using driving data from eleven drivers, recorded on real expressways, which includes a total of 988 lane change scenes. Experimental results show that our integrated models can detect risky lane change behavior better than either gaze-only or vehicle operation behavior-only models, achieving detection rates of 88 % and 84 % for lane changes to the left and right, respectively, with a false positive rate of less than 10 %.
