17. Language Change through Medial Communication

Abstract

The contribution provides an overview about the role of mass media - both print media and audiovisual media such as radio, television and new media on the Internet - in language change, diversification and standardization. Special focus is given to the analysis of the impact of language planning activities and the role of media in language planning, particularly concerning implementation and diffusion. The article includes a general view on pertinent research and publications. The examples given in order to illustrate differences and parallels mainly come from Romance languages.
