Quantitative Verfahren in der russischen Literaturwissenschaft der 1920er und 1930er Jahre

B. I. Jarcho und sein Beitrag zur quantitativen Literaturgeschichte

Kelih, Emmerich

Abstract

The paper offers background information about the application and use of quantitative methods in Russian literary and philological studies in the 1920s and 1930s of the 20th century. The focus lies on the substantial contribution of B. I. Yarkho (1889-1942) and his »exact« approach to the analysis of literary texts. Rooted in the Russian formalism movement, Yarkho developed a concise theoretical and methodological framework for the quantitative analysis of texts, both from a diachronic and synchronic point of view. In particular, Yarkho claimed to have found some general principles of the chronological development of the literary history. Finally, it can be shown in particular that these ideas are of an ongoing interest for the current discussion in quantitative literary studies and in distant reading.
