Measure-Entailment and Support in the Logic of Approximate Generalizations

Schurz, Gerhard / Adams, Ernest

Adams’ logic of conditional epistemic probabilities (or “degrees of belief”) is well-known. However, there is also a logic of statistical probabilities expressing facts about the real world. In this paper these probabilities are called “degrees of truth” of open formulas that are considered as approximate generalizations. Based on Adams (1974), this paper presents a precise elaboration of the logic of unconditional and conditional degrees of truths, based on ameasure-theoretic notion of entailment and support, including a restricted completeness proof and applications to the theory of orderings, balanced structures and the notion of quasi-classical reasoning.
