Color Geometry – Or Color Grammar?

Seron, Denis

Abstract

This article discusses some difficulties of the theory of color propounded by Meinong in his Remarks on the Color Solid and the Mixture Law of 1903. First, I argue that Meinong’s geometrical approach faces at least three sets of difficulties related to the following assumptions: colors possess a “nature” that can be grasped through intuition; they are separated from each other by continua in color space; there are an infinite number of a priori relations between colors. Second, I confront the geometrical approach with Wittgenstein’s grammatical approach, contending that the latter escapes these difficulties.
