Abstract

The opening passage of the Erra-Epic has been the subject of intense discussion centered on the question “Who is speaking?” The author argues that the relationship between the first line and the text that follows is crucial for the understanding of the remainder of the composition. He offers a new translation and interpretation of lines 1–22, that results in a new view of tablet I and ultimately the composition of the epic as a whole.
