    History

The optics community has a wide range of excellent scientific journals. Nevertheless, many important results from industry and industry related academic research are published in conference proceedings only. Most of them lack a proper peer review. Therefore, a number of optics experts created the idea of a new optics journal with a particular industry related approach at a meeting of the German Society of Applied Optics DGaO. This idea included not only the publication of double peer reviewed papers from applied research but also the continuous invitation of tutorials and review articles to distribute the rich experience of outstanding industry experts to the wider optics community.
Soon, Professor Michael Pfeffer took over the position of Editor-in-Chief and Dr. Andreas Thoss, a former Wiley-publisher with a strong record in optics journal publishing, became founding publisher. Together they set up partnerships with the European Optical Society EOS and De Gruyter, a medium sized academic publisher with a worldwide distribution network. The first issue was published in March 2012 and today AOT is an established platform for the publication of academic and industry related research in applied optics.
