EOS Topical and Annual Meetings 2016
The European Optical Society (EOS) holds several topical meetings each year. This year, we have already held two of them, the 5th EOS Topical Meeting on Terahertz Science and Technology (TST 2016) and Optical Coatings for Laser Applications (OCLA 2016) conference.
The next topical meeting of the EOS will be held in Adlershof, Berlin, Germany, where renowned scientists and industry representatives will share the stage during the EOS Bi-Annual Meeting (EOSAM) from the 26th to the 30th September. At the meeting, we are proud to present the keynote speech by Dr. Eric Betzig, Janelia Research Campus, Howard Hughes Medical Institute (USA), eight different topical meetings, various workshops, student tutorials on the topical meeting topics, industrial exhibitions and a lot more. 5th EOS Topical Meeting on Terahertz Science and Technology
The 5th EOS Topical Meeting on Terahertz Science and Technology (TST 2016) was organized in Pécs, Hungary from the 8th to the 11th May, 2016. The meeting took place in the ballroom of Hotel Palatinus, an Art-Nouveau masterpiece in the historic center of Pécs. Attended by 59 students and senior scientists, the conference was full of high quality presentations, interesting discussions and networking. Rupert Huber from the University of Regensburg (Germany), gave a 1-h keynote speech. As well as the 10 invited speeches, three Master Class Talks, aimed especially at the graduate student level, were given by Alfred Leitenstorfer, University of Konstanz (Germany), Franz Kärtner, MIT (USA) and CFEL (Germany) and Joo-Hiuk Son, University of Seoul (Korea).
As usual, the best student presentations of the topical meeting were awarded. The best student oral presentation went to Janine Keller, ETH Zürich (Switzerland) with the title ‘Ultra-strong coupling with spin-split heavy-hole cyclotron resonances in strained Ge quantum wells’ and the best poster presentation went to Stefan Busch for ‘Tunable dispersion prism for THz-frequencies made by 3D printing’. The EOS would like to congratulate the winners.

Optical Coatings for Laser Applications (OCLA 2016)
The Optical Coatings for Laser Applications (OCLA 2016) Conference was held in Buchs SG (Switzerland). After the great success in 2015, it was decided that the conference would be an annual event. The OCLA 2016 workshop took place on Thursday, 9th June 2016, at the NTB University of Applied Sciences. The workshop was jointly sponsored by the EOS, NTB, Swissphotonics and the RhySearch Innovation and Research Centre.
The focus of the workshop was on laser optics, high-end optical thin film deposition and characterization. Topics involved the manufacture of high-end optical coatings, laser technology, LIDT measurement and coating characterization. Dr. Marwan Abdou-Ahmed from the University of Stuttgart, gave a keynote speech on the overview of the application of grating waveguide structures or grating mirrors in high-power laser systems. Talks included updated information on laser damage resistance of optical coatings in the sub-ps regime and techniques for improving the laser damage threshold, the current limits and challenges faced by dispersive optics, as well as insights into the use of crystalline coatings in optical coating technology.
The industry and academia had a great opportunity to share ideas, have stimulating discussions in a brainstorming event that concluded the conference. The event was led by Dr. Hans Ebinger from RhySearch, supported by Dr. Carsten Ziolek, Institute PWO, NTB and Prof. Dr. Markus Michler, Institute MNT, NTB. The event gave the research partners an opportunity to better understand the needs of the industry partners.
The conference helped bridge the gap between academic research, commercial application and end-user needs and will continue to do so in coming years under the patronage of the EOS, Swissphotonics and RhySearch.
