On the basis of a detailed reconstruction of the history of and the relationships among the so-called Uttenreuth “Dreamers” of the early 1530s, the author argues that these can no longer be regarded as antinomian spiritualists. Instead, they should be seen as an Anabaptist group that sought to keep itself free from sin by adherence to Old Testament purity laws. A comparison of the Uttenreuthers’ concept of dreams with that of late medieval Traumbu¨cher| shows that the Dreamers did not want to do away with Scripture as a source of revelation, but they sought to confirm the biblical testimony through dreams.
