The optimization of the manufacturing sequence on a heavy plate rolling mill yields in a complex combinatorial optimization problem, including several different objectives and a large set of technical and logistic constraints. Stochastic Hill-Climbing-Algorithms are methods of local optimization, combining random and strategy. By means of these algorithms it is possible to improve the manufacturing process of heavy plate rolling mills with main focus on providing maximum flexibility in the product mix. In addition the reliability of the process is enhanced, bottlenecks are avoided and total costs can be reduced.
