Abstract

Evaluating research approaches in production automation can be cost- and time-intensive. Motivated by this challenge, the role of a case study which is open to the research community is discussed at first and recent developments towards an open case study, the Pick & Place Unit (PPU), are presented. Based on evolution aspects not covered by the PPU case study until now, an extension on requirements, fault handling and parallel evolution are presented as an example. While carving out essential aspects of these topics, various challenges were identified that conclude this article.

Zusammenfassung

Die Evaluation von Forschungsansätzen in der Automatisierung des Maschinen- und Anlagenbaus ist häufig zeit- und kostenintensiv. Im Hinblick auf diese Herausforderung wird die Rolle einer offenen Fallstudie diskutiert, deren Dokumentation und Weiterentwicklung gemeinschaftlich in Zusammenarbeit mit einer Vielzahl von Forschungsprojekten erfolgt. In diesem Beitrag werden zuerst aktuelle Entwicklungen einer offenen Fallstudie, der sogenannten Pick & Place Unit, vorgestellt. Auf Basis von Aspekten der Evolution, die aktuell noch nicht abgebildet werden, wird eine Erweiterung hinsichtlich Anforderungsspezifikation, Fehlerbehandlung und paralleler Evolution beispielhaft vorgestellt. Weiterführende Herausforderungen, die sich durch die vorgestellte Erweiterung identifizieren lassen, fassen den Beitrag zusammen.

Birgit Vogel-Heuser

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Birgit Vogel-Heuser graduated in electrical engineering and received the Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the RWTH Aachen in 1991. She worked for nearly ten years in industrial automation in the machine and plant manufacturing industry. After holding different chairs of automation she has been head of the Institute of Automation and Information Systems at the Technische Universität München since 2009. Her research work is focused on modeling and education in automation engineering for distributed and intelligent systems.

Christoph Legat

Dipl.-Inf. Christoph Legat is a researcher at the Institute of Automation and Information Systems, Technische Universität München. His research interest is on the application of formal methods and knowledge-based techniques to improve the flexibility and changeability of automation control systems.

Jens Folmer

M. Sc. Jens Folmer is currently researching towards his Ph.D. degree at the Institute of Automation and Information Systems, Technische Universität München supervised by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Birgit Vogel-Heuser. He does research on the formal analysis of process and alarm data for cause-effect analysis and root cause detection and diagnosis in automation.

Dipl.-Ing. Susanne Rösch has been working as a Ph.D. candidate at the Institute of Automation and Information Systems, Technische Universität München since 2012. Her research focuses on efficient testing and automated test case generation in machine and plant automation.
