Chvála řeči české – Bewertung von Sprache und Sprachpflege durch Schriftsteller in der Ersten Republik

The two decades of the First Czech Republic (1918–1938) represent a time of intense debates and upheaval within the history of Czech language cultivation. The puristically oriented language evaluation of Naše řeč was replaced by the modern theory of language culture developed by the Linguistic Circle of Prague. Numerous comments by laypersons accompanied this process. There were particularly authors who evaluated their language and the two theories of language cultivation. Mostly they felt attracted by both approaches at the same time. The article investigates science-based as well as non-scientific positions taken towards language and language cultivation considering the relevant criteria of evaluation as appropriate.

Keywords: First Czech Republic; Linguistic Circle of Prague; Czech language cultivation; puristically oriented language evaluation; Purism
