Because of discrepancies in the literature a redetermination of the structure of talc Mg3[(OH)2Si4O10] is reported. Space group of talc is P[unk] with lattice parameters a0 = 529.1(3) pm, b0 = 946.0(5) pm, c0 = 529.0(3)pm, α = 98.68(5)°, β = 119.90(5)° and γ = 85.27(5)°, Z = 2. Transformation by a′ = −c,b′ = 2a + c, c′ = −b leads to a pseudomonoclinic C-centred unit cell with layers of connected [SiO4]-tetrahedra parallel to (001). Two layers with opposite orientation provide for octahedral coordination polyhedra around Mg atoms.
