Order-disorder transition in MgAl2O4 spinel at high temperatures up to 1700 °C

An X-ray single-crystal structure analysis of a synthetic spinel, MgAl2O4, has been carried out at high temperatures up to 1700 °C. An abrupt decrease of the oxygen u-parameter has been observed at a temperature around 600 – 700°C, in conformity with the temperature at which the thermal expansion of the cell parameter was changed in a nonlinear fashion. The temperature agrees well with that of the lambda transition observed in the dilatation of the crystal lattice (Suzuki and Kumazawa, 1980) and with that of the change in the electric conductivity (Week and Sonder, 1980). The thermal expansion of the polyhedral volumes show features which are consistent with the atomic exchange between Mg at the tetrahedral site, A, and Al at the octahedral site, B, suggesting the occurrence of a order-disorder transition of the second-order type. After the transition, the temperature dependence of the inversion parameter i in (Mg1 – i, Ali) [Mgi, Al2 – i] O4 has been calculated in terms of the temperature variations of A – O and B – O bond distances. After heating at 1200°C for 4 days a quenched sample showed that the disordered state of the cation arrangement at the A and B sites is partially quenchable, giving a cell parameter smaller than that of the original sample.
