Verfeinerung der Kristallstrukturen von Ta5As4 und monoklinem Nb4.7Te4

The crystal structure of Ta5As4 has been refined on the basis of single crystal data. Ta5As4 is isotypic with Ti5Te4, space group I4/mC4h5 (No. 87). The lattice constants are a = 979.75(4) pm and c = 342.96(4) pm.

Besides the known tetragonal modification a new monoclinic form of “Nb5Te4” has been synthesized by means of a chemical transport reaction. Chemical analysis and crystallographic refinement lead to a composition Nb4.7Te4. A single crystal structure analysis showed space group C2/mC2h3 (No. 12) with a = 1444.3(7) pm, b = 369.6(1) pm, c = 1013.2(5) pm and β = 134.47(3)°. One Nb position is only 85% occupied, Guinier photographs indicate a small homogeneity range.

It is proposed that the earlier described monoclinic β-V5Te4 is isotypic with Nb4.7Te4, although space group choices Cc or C2/c were made in the latter case.
