Thermodynamic and Adsorption Behaviour of Vitamin B1 as a Corrosion Inhibitor for AISI 4130 Steel Alloy in HCl Solution

Abstract

The inhibition ability of Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) as a green inhibitor against the corrosion of AISI steel 4130 in 1 M HCl solution was evaluated by polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Polarization studies indicated that Thiamine retards both the cathodic and anodic reactions through chemical adsorption and blocking the active corrosion sites. The adsorption of thiamine obeyed the Frumkin adsorption isotherm. Kinetic and thermodynamic parameters such as activation energy, enthalpy, entropy and free energy of activation and adsorption were calculated. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to study the steel surface with and without inhibitor.
