Objective
Chinese Semiotic Studies (CSS) is a peer-reviewed academic journal sponsored by the International Institute for Semiotic Studies of Nanjing Normal University and the Chinese Association for Comparative Studies of Languages and Cultures.
As the first globally distributed English-language semiotics journal in China, CSS aims to promote the study of semiotics in China and the rest of the world, deepening the understanding and communication among semiotically minded scholars from diverse cultural backgrounds. This journal encompasses both the construction of theoretical frameworks for sign activities (semiosis) and meaning-generation, and a focus on the practical applications of semiotics. It includes both micro-level analyses and macro-level research, connecting various fields such as language, literature, art, philosophy, aesthetics, communication, biology, cognition, neuroscience, psychology, and anthropology.
In addition to the regular sections dedicated to semiotics-related research, CSS features three special columns: (i) Eastern semiotic resources, phenomena and thought, (ii) Western semiotic resources, phenomena and thought, and (iii) interaction among contemporary semioticians from East and West. We welcome a wide range of original research of semiotics, broadly construed as an inquiry à la Peirce, including but not limited to general semiotics, cognitive semiotics, cultural semiotics, social semiotics, communication semiotics, and biosemiotics, both in terms of theory and application.
