The voltammetric behaviour of Pt(111) electrodes in neutral and near-neutral aqueous KClO4 solutions (4 < pH < 9.7) is discussed. In this system, within the ideally polarizable potential region, the only processes affecting voltammetry and impedance are the adsorption and desorption of the H+ and OH− ions. Due to the low bulk concentrations of these ions, the desad processes are diffusion controlled. This situation is analysed using cyclic voltammetry, transient and impedance measurements.
